Title: AI Legalese Decoder: Helping You Make Informed Decisions about Repaying Your Student Loan

Introduction:

Good morning UKPF! As I am nearing the end of my student loan repayment journey, I wanted to seek your guidance regarding the best repayment option. The Student Loans Company (SLC) has suggested switching to direct debit to avoid overpayment, but I would like to gather more information before making a decision. In this post, I aim to discuss the advantages and potential drawbacks of setting up a direct debit. Furthermore, I will introduce the AI Legalese Decoder and demonstrate how it can assist you in making informed choices regarding your student loan repayment strategy.

Exploring the Direct Debit Option:

Currently, I repay my student loan through my PAYE (Pay As You Earn) pay cheque, where the repayment is deducted before tax. This pre-tax repayment process ensures that I’m paying the loan with money I haven’t yet been taxed on. However, if I opt for a direct debit, it entails contributing with after-tax funds. This aspect prompts me to question whether it makes financial sense to switch to a direct debit.

Student Loan repayments are, and have always been, deducted after tax & NICs.

They’re *calculated* on your pre-tax earnings, but the deduction happens after.

You should switch to DD unless you want to spend time chasing the SLC about getting your overpayments back.

  • ok531441

Your tax calculation isnÔÇÖt impacted by SL so it doesnÔÇÖt make a difference, you get taxed the same either way.

  • geekypenguin91

For 3 payments left I would probably just clear it in one go and be done with it.

But as others have said, it makes no difference to your tax/ni bill.

The payments are calculated pre-tax and taken post-tax

  • Dependent_Ad627

I would. You need to give them lots of notice. I think 6 weeks with the last payment. I would advise doing it over the phone. As they can process things faster then if you do it online. I found them very helpful when I rang them. But if you switch you will avoid getting over charged you can claim it back but still.
