I recently went to France during the summer. I decided to try WealthSimpleÔÇÖs cash account card.

ItÔÇÖs a debit card. I put 2k CA$ on it (it takes a few days for funds to be available).

Paid all my transactions in euros (up to 300Ôé¼, not that It matters). And every transaction was converted to CAD in the cash account.

Once I was offered to use the vendorÔÇÖs partner to pay in CAD for an exchange rate of 1.51. I declined and WealthSimple used a 1.46 exchange rate.

IÔÇÖm very satisfied with this card.

PS : the card has no fee, nor does the account, and you get 4% on your balance. And you have the option to withdraw a bit of cash without fee in case you need it. But I didnÔÇÖt try this option.

I’ve travelled all over the world with my (no fee) Home Trust Visa and it’s worked fine everywhere I’ve been.

  • raintrain001

    Recommendation is to have both

    * no foreign exchange (FX) credit card(s) (ex: Home Trust, Brim) for spending
    * no FX prepaid credit card (ex: Wealthsimple Cash card) for ATM withdrawals (and backup)

There are several articles on the web on Canadian no FX credit cards such as https://www.moneysense.ca/spend/credit-cards/best-no-foreign-transaction-fee-credit-cards-in-canada/

  • NerdyDan

I use the scotiabank passport visa infinite card for all travel purchases because of the zero forex fee

  • pfc-anon

Weird no one mentioned wise. It’s the best thing ever, works from your phone wallet instantly or a physical card if you wait for a week (to get the physical card) spot conversion rates are better than any exchange I found, plus you can manage all the limits from the app.

You can try the 0FX Scotia cards too for the points value but wise has been great.

  • Hotshot_14

Wise, 1000% just spent the last year abroad, went between 8 currencies and paid bare minimum fees in comparison to anyone else I ran into. Also their exchange rate was the best

  • echochambermanager

I used Wise Visa with success. It’s a preloaded credit card that transfers funds relatively instantly from your bank account. Was able to get money out of ATMs at the destination and always purchased in the local currency to get superior forex rates from Wise.

  • FlekZebel

I travel quit a bit around Europe the order that I use:

    1. Wise: I preload euros on there so I know exactly what I spent. Obviously without exchange fees when card is used. It’s a visa debit card and is accepted 80% of the time. I also like that it gives you an IBAN account so it’s very easy to do bank transfers within Europe.

    2. EQ or Wealthsimple: these are mastercard debit and seem to work whenever Wise won’t. Probably 80% of the time. No exchange fees, just the current mastercard exchange rate.

    3. Big 5 bank creditcard: if all else fails (which is very rare) or I need to make a security deposit for, for example, a car rental, hotel etc.

I prefer to use any of the preloaded debit cards before grabbing my credit card. I feel that debit cards are less susceptible to fraud and some European countries do frown upon using credit.

  • smcclay

I have used the Home Trust Visa for foreign currency purchases, but switched to the Brim Mastercard. Both have no foreign currency mark-up and use the respective issuers rate. However, Brim pays 1% cash-back on all purchases, but Home Trust excludes foreign purchases for cash-back.

  • 2044onRoute

I have no experience with this. But have been looking at it and I have only run across one no fee credit card ( Brim Mastercard , not ELITE Brim Mastercard ) that is a zero fee credit card with no foreign exchange fee. There are other fee based credit cards that have the first year free that include foreign exchange fees ( and some that also include trip insurance etc ).

I also saw that the basic Wealth Simple money account include a card with ‘minimal’ foreign exchange fees.

I would look into those , hopefully somebody with more travel experience will chime in.

  • Neat_Onion

    >IÔÇÖd like to avoid using cash for tracking purposes.

I was in Germany, Netherlands, and France in April – cash is very uncommon, even with food trucks it’s mostly tap to pay.

I struggled to spend my cash.

Sign up for a 0% forex card or one that offers a high cashback on foreign transactions.

Only thing to be aware of, avoid Dynamic Currency Conversion, ALWAYS pay in Euros (or whatever the local currency is), you’ll get the bank rate. DCC rate is set by the merchant so decline it.

  • NitroLada

Pay with credit card just, how much are you spending? Even say 10k, even at 2.5%, that’s $250 in fees…not really consequential at all

Or just get a card with no FX fee like Scotia passport

  • ElementField

I personally used some cash, some American Express Gold (no fx fee) and some Mastercard/visa (these did charge fees.)

My total spend was about $14,000 Canadian (10,000Ôé¼), not including hotels/Airbnb.

  • burtmaklinfbi1206

Get a card with no fx fees… Scotiabank amex gold comes to mind

  • UselessOptions

oops did i make a mess ƒÿÅ? clean it up jannie ƒÿÄ

clean up the mess i made here ƒñúƒñúƒñú

    CLEAN IT UP

    FOR $0.00

  • random20190826

Home Trust Visa and Brim MasterCard. 2 different issuers, 2 different networks. I imagine that most places that accept cards in Europe will take either Visa or MasterCard. Both cards are $0 annual fee cards.

  • tyguy82

I’m in the UK right now. Been using the wealthsimple cash account and the mastercard for about a month and the only issue I had was trying to buy a top up for my phone online. Other than that it’s been flawless

I mostly use Google pay with it. But if you get the card you can take cash out at any atm too which I have done too

  • King_Learjet

Been thinking about this for a while and donÔÇÖt have a good solution. The best answers require a U.S. address. Would be nice to have a card where you could easily access USD and EuroÔÇÖs. Started to look into Wise.

  • blessedbypotato

    Cibc air canada prepaid card.
