Comparison of N26 and Wise Cards for Daily Transactions in Denmark

Introduction:
Having recently moved to Denmark from the eurozone, I found myself in a situation where I needed to choose between two free-tier cards, N26 and Wise, for my everyday expenses. To make an informed decision, I conducted a comprehensive analysis and comparison of the fees associated with both cards. Surprisingly, my findings were contrary to the widespread recommendations favoring Wise. In light of this, I believe sharing my experience can be beneficial to others facing a similar dilemma.

Analysis of Bank Fees:

1. N26:
After conducting approximately 50 transactions using my N26 card, I calculated the weighted average of bank fees incurred. To my delight, the average fees amounted to only 0.04%. This exceptionally low figure surpassed my expectations, making N26 an attractive option for handling everyday payments. It is worth noting that these fees were significantly lower than those incurred with other banks.

2. Wise:
Contrary to popular advice I had come across, the results of my analysis revealed that Wise carries comparatively higher fees. With a weighted average of 0.50% over the same number of transactions, the costs associated with Wise were significantly elevated when compared to N26. This deviation from the general consensus caught me by surprise, prompting me to explore the reasons behind it.

What’s the fee you mention here? FX fee?

  • maateen

I can confirm that as well. The reason behind that – N26 provides Mastercard exchange rate directly (which is quite good and competitive) without any extra fee or markup.
Revolut does the same up to Ôé¼1000/month I believe.

  • MonetHadAss

That’s true for paying with a card because as another commenter said, N26 gives you the MasterCard’s exchange rate and no extra fees on top, while with Wise you’ll need to use their conversion rate to convert from the source currency to the destination currency before spending.

However, for bank to bank transfer, last I checked, N26 is also using Wise’s system, so for that the fees are probably the same if not higher on N26. For bank to bank transfer it’s probably cheapest to use Wise. The advices you read that recommends using Wise is probably for this case only.

    What about Revolut?

  • m1nkeh

Yea but N26 is a fucking dumpster fire ƒöÑ

  • No_Ant_2788

N26 is the one you want when you really are in for a back and forth e-mail debate about why your account is blocked. They could give me money and I wouldnÔÇÖt join again.

  • Wetzlar

Stay away from n26, they tend to lock people out of their accounts and hold funds for months. Shady af

  • PureQuatsch

Yeah here in Germany at least you couldnÔÇÖt pay me to use N26. Far too many horror stories.

  • digitalfakir

damn, didn’t know that. I thought Wise was beating the competition, even if they keep having their own issues. I couldn’t apply to N26 a few years because *they only take customers who can install the app* nonsense. But I might consider it, if it saves money on conversions.

  • Robus

Just my 2c as a counter to some other posts: I’ve been using N26 since before they were called N26. The support is garbage, but I’ve never been blocked or otherwise bothered by them.
