There are probably better ways but this is what I do – put all costs on an Amex to build up avios points and book all hotels through hotel.com, after you book 9 rooms you get the tenth free.

My avios points took my to Dubai for a few hundred quid earlier this year (upgraded our seats or it wouldÔÇÖve been cheaper), and the free hotel room is earmarked for a weekend away with my partner later on this year

I am interested to see what other people do though as, after the first year, avios points slow down as youÔÇÖre not getting any bonuses

Get a decent rewards card – whether it’s Avios, Amex or Tesco Clubcard depends on where you spend your money on your own time. In my opinion, the value of rewards will be far more than the 4-5% interest you can earn.

As another user has commented, hotels.com are great because every 10 nights you get a free night. So it will definitely reduce your expense.

I’d also look into Uber for buying your train tickets. They credit back 10% into your account based on your spend and also give you Avios points on spend. You can also use that credit on Uber Eats, which I imagine will be useful living away from home.

Again at least it will reduce expenses on an ongoing basis but if you’ve also got an Amex/Avios card, it will give a decent boost.

Edit – you can also book studios/apartments on hotels.com

I used to do similar in previous roles. Some things that helped me included booking train tickets (if thatÔÇÖs how you travel) as far in advance as possible .. travel off peak to further keep the costs down.

Travel Monday AM rather than Sunday night (one less hotel night needed). See if you can do a WFH on the Friday so you can leave Thursday evening (saving another hotel night).

Look outside London for hotels also. You can save a good chunk of cash by staying 30-45mins out of central London.

IÔÇÖd also recommend no loyalty with hotels and bookings, just get the cheapest room (check all the main sites as they do vary on price) that suits your needs (for me I wasnÔÇÖt too fussed just wanted an en-suite and WiFi).

I would also eat elsewhere to keep costs down.

    ItÔÇÖs definitely do-able.

I managed it for about 6 years before a role change and still needed to be in London (but new employer agreed to cover hotels and I covered the train)

Book your hotels with a cashback site, I’m getting 8% back through Expedia/Top Cashback.

Not sure if you can get avios too by using amex but if you use a cashback card you should get money that way too

If you are classed as a remote employee with WFH, you should push to be able to expense a hotel and travel for this once monthly trip.

Get a Railcard if you’re eligible for any and are going to be taking the train

Pay for everything on an Amex card that allows you to collect points. Then if you wanted, you could get a second 0% balance transfer credit card and shift the debt onto there. That way you get amex points as well.

  • Disciplined_20-04-15

With savings rates so high, if you can get a decent 0% purchase credit card it will be much more profitable to stooze your work travel expenses rather than any points scheme like avios.

You get 1 Avios point for every £1 spent on Amex.

    1 Avios is roughly 1p.

If you can rather keep that ┬ú1 in a chip 4.84 instant access savings account you’ll get 4.84p in a year. Even if you’re a top rate tax payer, it’s still more profitable than Amex even with the 40% tax hit on the savings giving you 2.9p

  • warriorscot

Honestly stooping that amount of cash seems a level of hassle that won’t be worth it. I would just get a decent credit card, pick a hotel chain or two to build status with, work out your best travel option and just plan a month in advance.

Trying to worry about credit cards and moving money around is an uneccesary amount of nickel and diming, especially as you’ll almost certainly be well past your tax free savings and investing wouldn’t be smart on such short time frames.

There’s a benefit to less complication. Just make sure you have good travel insurance as well.

I have an ex colleague who is an actuary and lives in London. She got a contract for work in Manchester. The office had shower and restaurant facilities. She slept in her car while on the contract.
