Understanding the Off-Topic Thread

You have a question. Maybe it’s about finance, maybe it’s about Japan, or maybe it’s about neither of those things. Regardless of the topic, you know that Google is right there in the next browser tab, and you know that Google can definitely answer your question. So why don’t you just change tabs? It would be so easy. Yet you don’t change tabs. Why? Because you know, deep down, that it’s going to be much more fun to post your question right here, in r/JapanFinance’s Weekly Off-Topic Thread!

What Kind of Questions are Welcome?

Questions on any topic are welcome. That means everything from "what will the JPY exchange rate be next month?", to "what will the JPY exchange rate be next year?", and even "should I exchange my USD for JPY yet?". You can ask about anything that’s on your mind, from the latest technology trends to your favorite TV shows.

Tips for Posting Your Question

When posting your question, keep in mind that the sub’s rules still apply. Make sure to be respectful and follow the community guidelines. Don’t forget to provide as much context as possible to help others understand your question. And if your question is related to taxes, don’t forget to give yourself the "US Taxpayer" flair if it applies to you.

It’s golden week and all, but the 毎月1日 tsumitate orders settle today at SBI.

I guess I should be happy to have dodged the 158 USDJPY rate.

TIL real wage growth in Japan is positive since the [last ten years](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgraph.png?g=1mIJf) after having [stalled for the last thirty](https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/fredgraph.png?g=1mIJA).

Do you regularly change electricity plans? How is your experience, easy like MNP’ing your mobile number or troublesome?

Kakaku.com -> 電気 gives a ranking of plans that suit your usage pattern, it seems that SymEnergy (Honshu) and Octopus (Kanto, Kansai) are now way cheaper than the local suppliers Tepco (東京電力)/Kansai Electric (関西電力). Worth considering a quick change.

Has anyone with a 10M+ a year salary ever collected unemployment even briefly? I’m **not** about to lose my job but really don’t understand the system (in case it ever happens). I generally see sites claiming it’s 50% to 80% of your salary but I never see the sites mention a cap.
What’s the max per month a person can get? It would be easier if they say if you made over XYZ the monthly cap you can get is: XXX per month.

    Two short banking questions:

    1. Any experience with banks that support 通称名 (registered alias) as account holder name? Eg. by showing them the MyNumber card and they use the Kanji name instead of the Romaji/katakana name. Which banks support that besides Rakuten and AEON?

    2. 振込 (transfer). Every online banking that I’ve seen lets the user change the sender’s account holder name, but no description/purpose field, and only Sony Bank has a “reference field” to enter purpose or invoice number. What if I transfer money to someone receiving many incoming transfers, how can they match the transfer with their billing system if most people just send money from their name without description and no invoice number?

Curious what happened today, May 2nd 5-6am with the yen strengthening by several percent, just to rebound an hour later (not fully though). Major markets closed that time so BoJ intervention? Doesn’t that have to be announced (at least afterwards)? Is there a good web site that tracks such abnormal fluctuations?

*share lending* Who exactly am I lending my shares to when I participate in share lending? There options market is quite thin in Japan, is it all institutional?

    ETF in question-> TYO:2563 – S&p500 hedged

(99% of my porfilio is Emaxis, this was bought at the high Y/$)

Not even NTA employees can resist a good side hustle, [it seems](https://www.asahi.com/articles/ASS4V33C4S4VUNHB00FM.html). An NTA employee in Fukushima started trading cars and other assets while they were on childcare leave, accumulating sales of 200 million yen.

There’s no suggestion of tax evasion, but the employee was suspended for not obtaining proper approval to operate the side business. The employee immediately resigned, hopefully to pursue a career trading cars.

So, I just had unauthorized charges on my SMBC Prestia global pass gold card for the second time in a few months.

Last time it was dozens of charges to a video site (投げ銭). This time it was for a shinkansen ticket.

The call center worker said it was a random attack by people guessing numbers.

Has anyone else experienced this lately?

So I just bought a house. Needs a small bit of work on the windows, but seems like a decent buy. Prime land, older building. wooden structure, but not a flimsy one. Part of it is using steal beams.
Anyway, I digress. My job seems rather stable and I can afford the mortgage. My wife and I will probably restart our investment journey from here.
With the whole yen dropping through the floor, is there any advice that has changed?
