Idk why your friend wants a direct express card but I can assume so they can take it. But the express card is a horrible card and the customer service is the worst. It’s best keeping the payments to where they’re going if there is no issues. Let the payee make the decisions as to what’s best. That’s the reason why they’re there.

  • Kaethy77

I can’t be very specific, but my impression of direct express is that it sucks big time. It’s not thru a bank, so if you have any issues there’s no place to go and talk to someone face to face. You have to call them.
Sounds to me like a regular bank account controlled solely by the payee and a cash card that could be loaded with an allowance for the eligible person would be the way to go.

Run as fast and as far away as you can from direct express

  • According-Interest54

The other issue is it sounds like they want to get the payment on the direct express card and then have the rep payee pay the bills. And then give the card to the beneficiary to spend money. That is not allowed.

The rep payee can give the beneficiary money (cash or transfer money to an account the beneficiary has access to). But if they are transferring the actual card back and forth there is nothing to prevent the beneficiary to decide to just keep the card and spend all the money when the payment arrives.

SSA hasn’t officially switched payments to my credit union rep payee account so I’m still using direct express. I haven’t had any problems with them although I’m sure many others can tell you their story. I’ve heard quite a bit about zero customer service, identity verification problems after already having the d.e. card for some time and needing a replacement card. I’ve been using direct express for a little over a year, the only thing that bothers me is the amount of time it takes to refund a purchase (about a week or so) or for a pre-authorization to clear (again about a week or so) which holds up those funds. I decided to make the switch to a credit union because of other’s horror stories and I don’t want to end up being one of those people. The state supplement is dependent on the state they live in so if they don’t already get it then their state doesn’t do that. I live in Ohio and they don’t supplement. The statements are readily available through the app and also can be downloaded as a PDF.

  • LeadingJumpy5048

Do not use direct express they are horrible they suspended my card for no reason I proved who I was and they done it again and you have to pay for your paper statements and it’s just a big headache I have green dot bank now and get my check four days earlier then the rest

  • tsidaysi

My thought is you need to stay out of it.

  • Anjel10520

Maybe they should look into cash app. The rep payee should still stick to a traditional bank to receive the SSI payments and pay the bills and the whatever is leftover they can cash app it to the beneficiary. ThatÔÇÖs just my suggestion. But I agree with most of the people here to stay away from direct express.
