Kuhn explains that the district is legally obligated to have a data privacy agreement (DPA) with each software vendor, but obtaining such agreements from certain websites proves challenging.

“There’s a lot of hype to what artificial intelligence is,” said Loren Conlan, carrier and technical education specialist for the Volusia County School District. “But learning what AI is actually about what is artificial, and what is intelligence is what that first class goes into.”
Volusia County Schools’ Conlan says the district is offering the new AI program in two high schools.
“It can pretty much go to any career path,” Conlan said. “In terms of like we’ve talked about before that it could be agricultural, or medical or manufacturing it all of those will have some source of AI within them. So this gives students more opportunity to grow their futures.”
And while this course has been a huge hit, it’s also opened the door to new conversations.
“While we block it on student devices and student accounts, we’re not na├»ve to think that they’re not using it,” Matt Kuhn said. “You know, they do have their own personal technology, they have their own cell phones, their computers at home.”
Chief technology officer for the district Kuhn says plagiarism and cheating are issues with AI. Websites like ChatGPT can write an essay from scratch.Because AI technology is so advanced, plagiarism websites can’t detect it. And while the district tries to work around cheating, Kuhn is also looking for ways to improve instruction with artificial intelligence, but some things need to be resolved first.
“Student data privacy is our biggest roadblock,” Kuhn said. “Because that’s a law, you know that the law says we have to have a contract with each software vendor called a DPA or data privacy agreement.”
Kuhn says its hard to get that privacy agreement with some websites, so they’re still exploring what can be done.
