# Seeking Advice on Travel-Related Legal Issue with Name Change

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out for advice on a pressing travel-related legal matter. For privacy purposes, let’s use the names “John Doe” as my old name and “Alex Smith” as my new legal name (not my real names).

Recently, I officially changed my name from John Doe to Alex Smith through a deed poll. Despite this legal change, my passport still displays my old name (John Doe), while my driver’s license and bank card have already been updated to Alex Smith.

I have an upcoming work trip scheduled, and I am set to travel from the UK to Italy for a conference. The dilemma lies in the fact that my flight and hotel reservations are booked under my old name (John Doe), which matches my British passport. Although I have initiated the passport renewal process to reflect my new name, I haven’t completed the procedure due to time constraints imposed by this trip. It’s important to note that my passport is still valid and the renewal application is in progress.

I am feeling anxious about the potential complications that may arise at customs or immigration checkpoints due to the mismatched names on my various documents. I am seeking guidance on whether it is safe for me to proceed with my travel plans under these circumstances, hoping to avoid any issues during my journey. Additionally, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how to effectively navigate this situation.

Your assistance and advice are invaluable to me. Thank you in advance for your support!

Some airlines will refuse to even let you board if the names don’t match. Even if you have a valid explanation. This is because they get fined, and have to pay to “remove” you from the desination country, if you get denied entry.

Get that passport fixed as a matter of priority.

Not a Lawyer – but have some relevant experience.

There was a typo of my birth date in one passport I had – and it cost me 9 hours in customs.

One travel document had my middle initial instead of my full middle name – it cost me 3 months of paperwork.

It’s taken my sister 3 years to get her passport updated to match her new (married) name.

In all 3 above cases – there were border crossings, bookings, and situations where they didn’t care… and situations in which they very much did care.

**LEGALLY** – you should get your ‘house’ in order before you travel internationally. Practically – that is not always possible.

    * The worst case I may prepare for would be the possibility of denied entry / being sent “home”
    * The most likely scenario is delays of minutes to hours explaining the situation.
    * Best case scenario it that is possible no-one will notice or care.

TL:DR – You **should** fix your issues before you travel. It’s obvious you can’t at this stage. That may cause you issues. Good luck.

Not a lawyer, but my kids have passports in different names, so I have experience travelling with passports that don’t match reservations etc.

Your biggest potential problem is gonna be the airline: they need the details in the booking to match the details in the passport. If these don’t match, most airlines don’t let you board. But that appears to be the case, so that’s fine.

No one else really cares, as long as you hand them valid ID documents, and don’t tell them that they are in the wrong name:

On exit from the uk no one else checks your passport, so no problem there. On entry to or exit from Italy they won’t know or care about your deed poll. They’ll see an in date and valid passport. No problem there. On return to the UK it’s pretty much the same: They’ll see a valid and in date passport, no problem. AFAIK Border Force (or whatever they are called now) have no insight into passport applications let alone deed polls, so they won’t know about any of this either. (And even if they did: Assuming you are a British Citizen, at absolute worst they are going to ask questions, but you can answer them – take the deed poll with you -, but i wouldn’t even expect that.)

No one else is gonna care, as long as you don’t tell the border guards etc that your name is actually Alex Smith.

One word of advice: make sure you don’t accidentally show someone who needed to see a document in the name of John Doe the Alex Smith one, or vice versa. Going ‘oh, my bad. I have another ID document in a different name’ never goes down too well – especially at the border in a foreign country (don’t ask how I know 😬)
