Seattle’s International Arrivals Facility and Founders Hall Win Prix Versailles Award
January 26, 2024

The International Arrivals Facility at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Founders Hall at University of Washington, Seattle, have been named amongst the ÔÇ£world’s most beautifulÔÇØ architecture projects by Prix Versailles. These projects were recognized in the 2023 Prix Versailles Awards, which honored a total of 93 new buildings and developments from around the globe. Prix Versailles, established in 2015, aims to celebrate outstanding contemporary architectural projects across eight categories spanning education, sports, and tourism.
With this prestigious award, the IAF was acknowledged in the airports category, while Founders Hall was recognized as one of the best campus projects worldwide. Both projects stood out for their exceptional design and functionality, making them worthy recipients of this esteemed award.
The IAF, which opened in spring 2022, was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and The Miller Hull Partnership. This $986 million facility has improved the airport’s international capabilities by increasing the number of gates from 12 to 20 and installing a new 450,000-square-foot grand hall with seven baggage carousels for arriving passengers. The design team’s objective was to efficiently guide people through the airport while creating a welcoming space that encapsulates the culture and environment of the Pacific Northwest.
A further testament to its excellence, the IAF’s new elevated walkway offers stunning views of Mount Rainier, and the Olympic and Cascade Mountain ranges, providing passengers with an unforgettable experience upon arrival.
Similarly, Founders Hall, part of the larger Foster School of Business complex, opened in June 2022 and was the first fully mass timber building on the University of Washington campus. Designed by LMN Architects, this building embodies the university’s commitment to sustainability by reducing carbon emissions by over 90%. The design also integrates the building with the surrounding environment, preserving a grove of native Douglas fir and sequoia trees and showcasing the mass timber frame.
Both the IAF and Founders Hall have redefined architectural standards and set new benchmarks for sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, making them truly deserving of the Prix Versailles recognition.
