Retired in 1994 and submitted claims in 2019. Approved for Service Connection. Still adding new claims.
Discharged in 1993, submitted claim Aug 2023, rated May 2024. Mine was an initial claim.
Honorable discharge in 1990 and got approved last week.
Out in 2007. No service treatment records or evidence from while I was enlisted. I provided personal statement, CURRENT diagnosis, buddy letters, and other current evidence like doctors notes and hearing test. Was approved on first claim. The key is put together a thorough, well organized application that paints a picture for the reviewer.
For everyone getting new claims approved years/decades later, what type of evidence is supportive of a service connection? Is the condition referenced in your military medical records or is there a different approach to prove service connection?
I was 20 years out before my first claim.
The answer is yes you can. Use the Knowledge Base as a starting point. Gather your medical records and any private records. Get letters from friends and family. If you can have your current doctors provide DBQ’s – don’t pay for these especially from out of state doctors. Check into VSO’s to help out. I have been out since 2006 and still filing and working through the system. Definitely use that knowledge base to help educate yourself on what to do.
Discharged in 1990 first claim filed in 2015 and granted in 2017
Yes. It took me 14 years and got 100tp first go. But that’s only because they already had records of my diagnoses and combat. Point is yes it’s possible.
File after you have all you need. Get your VA problem list. Any private doctors assessments. And really almost as if not just as important is a very thorough history of your life prior to, during, and after. The sequence of events in chronological order. Include at least two letters from those who knew you before and after military service. Since yours is a while after ETS, like mine… Find a life long friend, a family member, and someone you knew during the military and after with constant communication.
The letters will help push decisions from 70 to 100.
Show any letters from DOL about firings or records showing you might have issues with work.
Explain any gained a lost relationship.
Your financial health as time went on after discharge.
All that sort of stuff will help you out. 🤘🏻
