    In my industry (insurance), entry level admin/customer service positions are benchmarked in a salary range of 55-65k. Where you’d get offered in the band would depend on prior experience. I don’t think you’d be out of line to request 60k if you believe you could bring existing skills to the role.

    I did corporate reception for five years and it’s shocking how many people aren’t cut out for front desk work. We used to have to get temps in from time to time if the EA went on leave, I’d step up and do her job and we’d get temps to cover for me. I had to call the agencies multiple times and get replacements for people who couldn’t take proper phone messages, have enough peripheral awareness to do tasks when needed (tidy up the newspapers in the waiting area when they’d gotten disheveled or take abandoned empty coffee cups back into the kitchen), or enough ingenuity to get non-visible tasks done without being asked (checking on the dishwasher to see if the cycle was done and if so, put the dishes away, etc).

    These aren’t tasks aren’t difficult or skilled in or of themselves specifically but what the work really involves being constantly vigilant of your surroundings, being able to react and adapt extremely quickly, and anticipate needs. And that’s what’s skilled.

    Having said that, different workplaces will have different demands, and the salary should reflect what’s being asked of you. The bigger the office/organisation the higher the starting salary should be IMO. If it’s a really small place (Less balls you’re juggling) and you don’t have experience $60k may be too much to ask for.

    $65k should be absolute minimum this day in age for an Admin role. $45k is an absolute joke.

    Think 60k is more than reasonable. Was on 75k as an admin assistant with 0 industry experience, and it felt like a lowball considering the amount of work I smashed out every day.

    Keep in mind that this is one of those roles that tends to expand more or less indefinitely as people recognise your competence and begin to drop more and more on your plate.

    Even if 60k seems like a lot now, can guarantee it will not be unskilled labour in a year’s time. Reports, presentations, agendas, calendar management, inductions, cost control, generating dashboards, analysis, legal, stakeholder management, marketing, quality, audits and compliance – the list of tasks you will be exposed to can literally go on and on forever.

    One of the first things that I learned on that job was that I needed a pay rise lol

    Considering that full time minimum wage is a bit over 45k a year, I think asking 60k for a skilled entry level role is fairly reasonable. Maybe even accepting a 55k counteroffer from their end might be possible.

    I would think not but I have 10 years exp in admin and have progressed to basically the highest band level there is without being a manager or EA to a super important CEO or something, I was laid off recently so I have been applying for jobs and I’ve only just been getting call backs to interview for sub-$70k jobs. The most recent call, they told me I was a strong applicant as almost 100 people applied so I don’t feel like I’m in a position to bargain. It sucks a lot but, yeah I was on 45k (it was barely anything post tax) at my first job that wasn’t casual after looking for work for an entire year (pre-pandemic).

    PS I’ve heard some retail stores pay low six figures for manager positions – my old boss was on $150k or something. That might be more lucrative?

    I think it is worth asking for $65k base considering you’re already on $60k and you could argue that many of your skills could be transferrable and see what they have to say.

    If you are going to do admin/receptionist in Melbourne, I would recommend looking at government jobs. State pays a bit better but local governments have a bit more security. Union job with better pay for someone with your level of experience.

    Ask for $65k but be happy if they bring it down to $60k. As long as you can really demonstrate your 2IC retail experience to the receptionist role, you’ll be fine.

    My partner went into admin with no admin experience at a hospital (although she is a qualified nurse with nursing experience) and gets 60k. I think it’s entirely reasonable as a bare minimum.

    It’s not unskilled. Make sure you lean into how your experience in retail will transfer over to the new role (eg. speaking with customers, etc.) and then ask for $65K.

    They will do everything to under pay you. Why because there are lots of individuals that don’t understand what their skills are worth on the real market.

    If your doing 2iC in retail can’t you look a customer service role and then jump to another role 6 months later? Or maybe a longer term contract role that will give you the skills that you can then transfer to $$$?

    or look at government roles at all levels.
