    > Looking for simple options, just somewhere to put my piddly $$ and then eventually grow it.

To be clear, if you’re a law-abiding honest American, there is no way to do this. Your money can’t grow; you can only hold it as cash.

Someone here said recently “a rando lawyer says iDeCo is okay for Americans,” but uh, I won’t be testing that theory. It certainly seems like a plain reading of the rules would say there is no way for Americans to use iDeCo without risking tax trouble with America.

Also, let’s please not use 401(k) or IRA to refer to Japanese things. Yeah, there are some similarities between the iDeCo/DC pension and the American 401(k), and some similarities between NISA and IRA, but they are absolutely not one-to-one. Whoever wrote j401k on some blog post and caused all this trouble should feel bad, and everybody else should stop copying it.

One of your comments seemed to imply that you could transfer money from the Japanese retirement accounts to the American retirement accounts. To be clear, that is definitely not a thing. They’re totally separate universes.

  • Sweet_AndFullOfGrace

I am assuming your new employer does not offer 401(k)s. I am also assuming you are talking about 401(k)s, the US retirement account, and not the frequently misnamed Japan “401(k)”, a corporate DC plan (þó║իܵïáÕç║Õ╣┤Úçæ).

Is it an option to leave it? Depending on your provider, they may let you just keep it there. You won’t be able to contribute to it, but it will continue doing its thing.

Otherwise, you will need to roll it over to a traditional IRA account or do a roth-IRA conversion (tax event) with a new financial services provider.

I went through this about a year and a half ago. Based on advice backing other comments, I let my employer defined contribution plan roll over to cash. I get mail to put it in an iDeCo and routinely throw that paper away.

ItÔÇÖs sad. ItÔÇÖs painful. It reminds me never to take an employer DC again.

Depending on the currency it’s denominated in, for that amount WISE, etc. is probably the best way, according to all the Money Transfer boffins on here.

There is no 401k in Japan unless you refer to company DC , which is literally ideco ( that you can easily transfer to )
