Considering a Name Change Post-Probation and Registry

Looking to Change My Name After Probation and Registry

When I reach the end of my probation and registry period, I am seriously considering changing my name. One of the main drivers behind this decision is the fact that multiple articles featuring my mugshot appear when my name is Googled. This has led me to contemplate investing in an online reputation management service, but I question the efficacy of such a service if the incriminating news articles cannot be removed. However, I am inclined to believe that I will no longer be categorized as a felon once I am off probation. As far as I know, there are no legal barriers preventing me from making this significant change.

I felt like I gave up so much when I was arrested/convicted, I didnÔÇÖt want to lose my name too. Plus, prior to my offense, I spent a lot of energy on avoidance and not dealing with stress head on. Changing my name would have felt too much like avoidance to me.

IÔÇÖm pretty proud of who I am today. And if anyone doesnÔÇÖt like the person I am now, I canÔÇÖt be worried about them.

I’ve considered it but haven’t done it yet. There are actual videos of me going to my first court date for CSAM. Meanwhile, there’s someone from my same area that got 40 years for rape, not a single video or picture of him.

My wife represented a fellow on the registry who changed his name to a popular winter vacation city and a season, so whenever anyone Googles him all you get are weather forecasts. Kind of brilliant actually.

I have a very googleable name and all my stuff is online, and IÔÇÖm too stubborn so I guess I donÔÇÖt worry about it very much. ItÔÇÖs worked out so far.

If you change your name they’ll just change your registry status to the new name. So there’s no net-gain.

You said you will not be a felon once you are off probation. That is not necessarily true. You will still have a felony on your record unless you got it expunged. A couple of states do not ask about your record so those would be the ones to move to and make the change in. I am assuming you will be off the registry.

If youÔÇÖre hiding from police, theyÔÇÖll see you anyway. If youÔÇÖre hiding from public, your name should not be on registry, so why bother? I think a background check will find your old name. Seems like a lot of trouble for little gain

Only positive I see is wonÔÇÖt come up in google, but IÔÇÖm not even sure about that. Google can find your keys if you lost them. Or it seem that way ƒÿéƒÿé

I’m off registry. It’s possible to do in my state…wondering what waves it causes among friends/coworkers/family depending on what is changed, especially as a husband & dad. Sort of a Streisand effect?

I was able to change my surname but had to give my reasons for the name change. I have my dads name now so check your local laws.

  • Annual_Rooster5678

I considered it. Luckily I share a name with a very famous artist so if you google me youÔÇÖll just be surprised IÔÇÖve been dead for so long.

  • MySecretSOAccount

I thought about it a few times in the early days and even had a couple of names picked out but in the end I didn’t bother.

What I do now is go more by my birth name which throws up a couple of old music projects I did but that’s it. The name difference isn’t drastic but it’s enough to avoid the Google effect.

Think John becoming Jonathan, Chris to Christopher.

    That’s what I did.

Now I think about it, I might just change my name to Jet Li, yes I am asian and you know what they always say: We all look alike.

  • NotKnown5328

(UK) I have changed my name. There was nothing of my original offences online (March 2000 conviction) But I made a mistake after being pressured to do something for another ex-offender I was in contact with and made the papers with a picture. (Annoyingly he was only mentioned once and no pic!) I tied it all in for me to change it just before I left the UK for a life in Europe. Nobody here knows my old name. My new name is the same as a famous actor so if any one Google’s me they will have millions of false positives to search through.

  • Mother-Profile4830

What can I do when I get off of the registry?

  • Busy-Mail3996

I kinda lucked out with my name. My last name is a common English word, so a general Google search is pointless. Of course if you add more details you might get lucky but it has not been an issue for me.
