I worked for a place in NZ back in the 90ÔÇÖs who had the gall to suggest that the unpaid labour post-closing time was an incentive to be better at your job.

If I can offer any advice to any young workers its to read your contract, read the award, talk to your parents, talk to your workmates cover all of your bases.
Nice of them to blame the software. They control the settings and probably pay to have customisation to meet their needs. Software is a tool not the law.

Reasonable overtime doesn’t count when you are being paid minimum/award wages (which I would assume you are as a retail employee). Even with salaried employees, if the “reasonable overtime” puts you below the award wage (as in $ per total hours worked), then it is still illegal.
You clock in before you lift a finger to assist the business, you don’t clock out until you have completed your mandatory duties, and once clocked out you don’t lift a finger to assist the business. Its not uncommon for software to round to the nearest 7.5 minute increment or similar, but if you’re working 30 minutes per shift every shift it should be recorded in your timestamps and paid accordingly. Start making records of your actual worked time, the time you punched in and out, and the times that are recorded on your timesheet for each period – if your timesheet doesn’t align with the hours reported on your pay slip, contact the fairwork ombudsman for their assistance
I worked in a retail job and they did the same. Wanted you to arrive 15 mins before open, and stay 30 mins after close.
But they only paid from open to close.
It’s wage theft.
If you are paid by the hour there is none of reasonable overtime bs, you sound be paid the whole time you are working
Get a copy of the written policy, keep records of every hour you work, find a better job, resign, the go to the FWO, an employment lawyer, or (best option) your Union to recover the unpaid wages.
