## Returning to the Office Dilemma: The Impact on Work-Life Balance

### Concerns about the Trend of Returning to the Office

Lately, there has been a surge in articles discussing the potential return to office work, with attention-grabbing headlines such as “Bosses plan to pay staff less for working at home.” Initially, I dismissed these as clickbait, but now I find myself confronting the harsh reality as my workplace is implementing a 50% return to the office policy.

### Personal Impact and Health Considerations

This decision has left me feeling devastated, as I reside far from the office and have significant health issues that make working from home (WFH) a more suitable option for me. WFH allows me to prioritize my health by having the time to prepare healthy meals, engage in regular exercise, and get adequate sleep. On the other hand, commuting for hours, compromising on meals, and struggling with sleep deprivation when at the office is not conducive to maintaining my well-being.

### Future Implications for Work Arrangements

I am left to wonder if these articles predicting a future where a significant portion of the workforce will be required to work in-office for at least 50% of the time may indeed come true. The potential impact on work-life balance, especially for individuals with specific health concerns like myself, is a cause for concern.

Nope, switch jobs or switch industries.

100% WFH is still very much a reality for a lot of corporate jobs.

  • mr--godot

Just don’t come in. It’s pretty easy. Put the onus on them to fire you.

  • tjsr

It’s mostly that an editor at these news organizations are trying to drive this as an agenda – either because they believe in it themselves, or it benefits someone they have some business or other involvement with – eg, an advertiser. They’re basically trying to drum up ideas that other employers can use as ammunition to bring down their costs and make more money – by publishing this kind of thing as “news”, it gives the feel that it’s common and/or becoming some kind of industry norm.

50% WFH / hybrid is probably going to become the new norm tbh. Especially do your workplace is cool interpreting that a bit loosely (3 days wfh, 2 in the office maybe some weeks an extra wfh day if you have an appointment or whatever), itÔÇÖs really not so bad.

I would refuse a job these days if they asked for 100% on-site but that obviously depends on sector and job title.

  • zoidberg_doc

So you thought it was click bait until you got one data point that agrees with it so now you assume most places will follow suit?

  • Historical_Boat_9712

I work in the public service, middle management, and conversations are happening about how we accomodate a lot more WFH, not less. A bit early to call it the new normal, but I expect WFH to increase at least 33% (in my huge department) in the next 12 – 18 months.

  • Deranged_Snowflake

All of us being forced back in the office today were working 5 days a week in the office in 2019 so even 1 day at home is better than what we used to get.

I think most of the big corporates will go back to 100% WFH eventually. Partly why I am staying put where I am because we changed premises during COVID and our new premises only fits 50% of our current employees and we plan to grow so we have WFH built into our property management strategy.

  • aldispecialbuy

50% WFH is still extremely reasonable. Did you think youÔÇÖd WFH for the rest of your working career?

  • UhUhWaitForTheCream

The back to office push is failing in basically every metric. Since 2022/23 productivity has been falling off a cliff. During 2020/21 when wfh was prevalent productivity was record high.

Furthermore commercial real estate is in tatters due to the cost of living. People cannot afford to spend 2 hours in traffic commuting to the office. More companies are offloading offices and downsizing their office presence.

ItÔÇÖs the final push I think before we see permanent wfh-

Ps. This is all industry specific.

Sales jobs for example can wfh. Nurses cannot. So the market will pick the lifestyle they want
