It’s a process since you’re on probation. Off probation it’s not a big deal. You just register in the new county, call the old one and tell them you moved, they can see you’ve registered, etc… but if you’re still working in the other county you have to stay on the registry there and let them know you’ve moved but are still working there.
On probation it’s a process. You’ll have to speak to your PO and let them know you’d like to move and they begin to initiate initiate the transfer. Your PO starts the paperwork and speaks to the state and the PO in the county you want to move to.
So, first you have to get the transfer approved. The process takes a minimum of 2-3 weeks just to get approved. So don’t expect it to be fast. Dont expect it to be 2 weeks. It won’t be. Expect it to be 3+. Your PO has to send the paperwork to the state for approval, then send it to the PO and the Sheriff in the other county.
Then you have to get housing an a job approved. You have to find a place to live. The PO and the Sheriffs office in the new county have to approve the place. You have to find a job there. That also has to be approved by the PO and the Sheriffs office.
Here’s where it gets sticky. They likely won’t accept the transfer unless you have a job and housing lined up, but it’s difficult to get a job and housing when you have to wait for the transfer to be approved and knowing they can deny either.
Your PO does not have to allow you to move. The PO in the other county doesn’t have to accept the transfer. The state doesn’t have to allow it. The Sheriff doesn’t have to allow it. So keep that in mind as you navigate this process.
It usually gets approved as long as it meets the proximity laws and is a place you can legally work. But it’s a lot of work on their end and will require much patience on yours, which is difficult to have when you’re trying to do all of these seemingly impossible things that are 10x more difficult than they should be.
We just did all of this. We have a great relationship with my guys PO and he went ahead and asked the PO and the Sheriff where we’d be moving to for preapproval (which isn’t really a thing, but he didn’t want us to buy a house then be told “nope, sorry, can’t live there.”
We got the address approved by the Sheriff, the receiving PO said she was good with it and also checked the address to make sure it was okay. Bought the house, his PO started the transfer. Thankfully his job isn’t changing, and it’s a bordering county, which made it all a whole lot easier.
Highly recommend being careful about where you move. There are a lot of places I crossed off my list because they take it over the top.
The best thing to do is ask your PO what steps you need to take first and ask if they’ll speak to the other PO. Talk to your SOTP therapist about it too. His was very helpful throughout the process.
