DeGeorge Family Closes Lakeway Restaurant After 70 Years of Service

ASHTABULA — The DeGeorge family has officially announced the closure of Lakeway Restaurant, bringing an end to a longstanding era in the community.

“In this bittersweet moment, we announce the sale of Lakeway Restaurant,” said David DeGeorge. “For over seven decades, we have been dedicated to serving the community of Ashtabula County with delectable meals. Through this journey, we have forged strong connections with our community members, developing lasting friendships that have become an integral part of our family.”

Established in 1952 by Gerri and the late Lawrence Bruno DeGeorge, the original Lakeway stood adjacent to the current building. With the passage of time, the aging structure necessitated a significant investment for repairs or a complete rebuild.

The current Lakeway was constructed in 1975, coinciding with David’s graduation from St. John High School, and has since been a cornerstone of the community.

Reflecting on the past, Gerri shared her cherished memories, recalling the bustling atmosphere when Harbor High School was still operational.

“The place was lively back in the day, bustling with school kids,” she reminisced. “They would stop by for breakfast before heading to school, creating a welcoming family environment. We have been fortunate to serve many loyal customers over the years, who have played a pivotal role in shaping Lakeway.”

The DeGeorges expressed gratitude towards their dedicated employees, many of whom have become an extension of their family and remained loyal for an extensive period.

Long-time employee Virginia Knox, who has devoted 49 years to Lakeway, praised the DeGeorges for their exceptional leadership and the kindness shown to both employees and customers.

David, with nearly five decades of culinary experience at the restaurant, acknowledged that it was time for him to embark on a new chapter of retirement.

“I am eager to spend quality time with my grandchildren, enjoy the comforts of home, and explore new experiences,” he shared. “Retirement will afford me the opportunity to travel and fulfill long-held aspirations, such as a trip to Italy. The overwhelming support for my retirement is truly heartwarming.”

After being on the market for approximately two years, Lakeway found a new owner in Luis Navarro, proprietor of Los Compadres.

Lakeway will continue to operate until July 21, with serving hours from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

David and Gerri expressed their profound gratitude to the community for their unwavering support throughout Lakeway’s journey, expressing excitement for the upcoming chapter of retirement.
