Google CEO Sundar Pichai responds to OpenAI using YouTube content to train AI model

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has responded to reports about Microsoft-backed OpenAI allegedly using YouTube content to train its AI model Sora. In an interview with CNBC, Pichai said that Google will ‘sort it out’ if OpenAI actually relied on YouTube videos.

Pichai stated, “Look, I think it’s a question for them to answer. I don’t have anything to add. We do have clear terms of service. So, you know, I think normally in these things we engage with companies and make sure they understand our terms of service. And we’ll sort it out,” he added.

‘Not sure’ if Sora is being trained on YouTube videos, says OpenAI’s COO

Recently, OpenAI CTO Mira Murati told the Wall Street Journal that she wasn’t sure if Sora is being trained on YouTube videos and content. Murati said that OpenAI’s AI model was drawn on publicly available data and licensed data.

Later, the New York Times (NYT) reported that OpenAI had transcribed more than a million hours of YouTube videos. NYT has reportedly sued OpenAI for copyright infringement and training models on their articles.

OpenAI’s Sora AI model has the ability to generate videos with just text input. At its annual developer conference I/O 2024, Google has launched its latest artificial intelligence (AI)-based text-to-video generator model, Veo, that will compete with OpenAI’s Sora. The tech giant claims that the new video generation model can create high-quality 1080p videos from text, images, and video prompts.

Google’s Veo can capture the details of a user’s instruction in different visual and cinematic styles. With this model, users can ask for videos like aerial shots of a landscape or a timelapse. Users can further edit their videos with additional prompts.
