Whether bailiffs can force their way into your home depends on the type of debt they’re collecting – see [here](https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/debt-and-money/action-your-creditor-can-take/bailiffs/stopping-bailiffs/stopping-bailiffs-at-your-door/). But briefly, unless it’s a court fine or a tax debt they’re not allowed to force their way in (and even if they’re allowed to, they generally don’t).

However…if you leave your doors unlocked, they’re perfectly allowed to enter through an unlocked door.

You say this is a “fine”, but you don’t say what type. But regardless, if you accept that you owe the debt you’re likely better off talking to them and making a payment plan if that’s at all possible.

  • AlwaysBeC1imbing

I mean, you’re gonna have them pursuing you regardless and it will be stressful.

Best thing would be to discuss a payment plan

  • NewsFromBoilingWell

Hi – you are right to deal with this given your partner’s pregnancy.

If I were you I would contact stepchange/citizens advice or similar. If you accept you have debts, they will help you deal with creditors etc.

If you don’t want. To do this, you’ll need to post details of your debt, income etc.

  • MeMyselfAndMe_Again

Discuss a payment plan. You have NO choice. Do NOT refuse to talk. Every time they need to visit, your debt will increase with charges.

If it’s a fine from court and you don’t pay it…ultimately you “could” end up in prison for non-payment of the fine.

    TALK TO THEM!

  • pops789765

If you owe the debt the easiest way to get it to go away and stop it getting bigger is to pay it if you can.

  • Puzzled-Put-7077

WhatÔÇÖs the fine and when was the CCJ issued?

  • SubjectiveAssertive

You as a private individual don’t have to let them enter your house, however they could for example remove your car.

How much do you now owe? You’d be better off paying if at all possible

  • allie-echo

Might be worth posting in r/LegalAdviceUK.

You need to engage with CDER on this. Ignoring it is a terrible idea as if the bailiffs aren’t successful the court can issue a warrant for your arrest. Once arrested you’ll be taken to court and face the possibility of being imprisoned for non payment of your fine.

You will need to arrange your finances so you can make a good offer to CDER that would see your fine and all additional enforcement costs paid off within a short period of time. If they feel the time period is too long they will reject your suggestion.

Fines are a priority debt. You must take it seriously. You have already missed a number of opportunities to engage with the process and deal directly with the courts over repayment arrangements. This has led to you now owing more money that you previously would have. The more CDER have to do, the more that amount is going to increase. Every time they visit your house your debt is getting bigger.

A fine isn’t like other types of debt. It is the consequence of criminal actions. Ignoring it won’t make it go away.
