    It isn’t disappearing. If you are taking more out of your savings than you are putting in and spending it, you are spending more than you earn. That debt is massive compared to your income. You’ve just come back from holiday, got another booked and two festivals in the pipeline. If you hate the debt hanging over you, you need to hate it more than you do getting more into debt.

    Also, £1500 is minimum wage assuming a 40hr week, time to upskill.

    I think you need to do a little work to track your spending and between you and your partner you need to work out what your priorities are going to be. I’m also on a process to pay off debt I accrued due to several expensive repairs being needed in my home at the same time and not enough savings to cover it all, therefore no holiday and no festivals this year.

    When does the £700 have to be paid back to your family member? When does the 0% end on your credit cards?
    You bring home about £1500, your portions of bills and food is about £700 and driving lessons £150.
    That means there’s £650 left so you need to track what’s happening to it. Do you need money to travel to work? Any other subscriptions? Do the dog expenses come out of the joint account or your money?
    I know budgeting can be overwhelming but it’s a necessary step to get started.

    Personally I would choose paying off that debt before saving although having a small emergency fund is also a good idea and you and your partner need to decide together what that needs to look like.

    With that amount of debt, you shouldn’t be going on holidays and doing unnecessary spending. Clear the debt asap, and then you can enjoy your life without the constant fear of the debt overhanging you.

    On your wage, it will take a while to clear, and you need to be very responsible. Otherwise, this has the potential to spiral out of control

    So I also struggle with ADHD& Debt. I stumbled across this post actually by searching for others who struggle with ADHD tax.

    I couldn’t curb the spending, and I just couldn’t figure out where my money was going. I’m medicated as of recently, last 2 months and I found that my impulse control has improved significantly. I’ve actually been spending less, and I created a budget to see everything visually in google sheets. I’m working on getting myself out of a hole that I put myself in but I’m finally realizing where my money is going…to fast food.

    Are you medicated? It’s been life changing, I still have a spending issue but its more manageable now that I can think clearer if that makes sense? I’m just now in the process of fixing the issue I put myself in.

    I believe some of the ADHD subreddits have some good resources to help you with this – you need to use them, because this is the core of the problem.

    You take home ~£1500 per month and your bills/mortgage are £500 so you’re spending £800 or £1000 a month that you can’t account for.

    Every £80 you spend is a day you have work – if you want a new <thing> then how many days’ work is that? If you can reduce your outgoings by £80 then you can afford to take a day off work. You should treat budgeting like it’s a job – take it seriously.

    I disagree with the advice to pay off 0% cards immediately and cancel your driving lessons. I don’t know how long you’ve been taking them, but if you stop now you’ll forget everything you’ve learned – learning to drive gets harder with age, and older learners require more lessons. And having a driving license may open job opportunities to you – a job in sales might get you a company car. So that depends on how far along you are, but you rushed to cancel them immediately without taking a day or two to ponder the decision; taking holidays when you have debts “because I deserve a treat” also sounds like a typical ADHD thing to do.
