1. Introduction and Background
Hello and thank you kindly for taking the time to assist me with my inquiries. I have recently focused on improving my financial situation and, in addition to maintaining a savings account, I am seeking alternative investment avenues that are not overly complex. As a newcomer to the intricacies of investing, particularly in relation to economics, I have been extensively researching ETFs as a viable starting point. This is mainly due to their long-term perspective and relatively lower risk when compared to stocks, options, and other investment instruments that necessitate significant time and research commitment, which unfortunately, I am unable to dedicate at the moment.

2. Understanding ETFs and their Operational Strategy
Considering the aforementioned context, I would greatly appreciate it if you could kindly provide me with a comprehensive explanation of how ETFs function and delve into the strategic considerations underlying their investment approach. Expanding my knowledge in this area would serve as a valuable foundation for me to navigate the world of ETFs more proficiently.

3. Guidance for Beginners and Identifying Conservative ETFs
Considering my amateur status as an investor, I would also be grateful if you could share your expert advice on how a beginner should approach investing in ETFs. This guidance would prove instrumental in formulating and executing a sound investment strategy.

There is a lot of information in the wiki in the sidebar here, it’s good to have a look.

ETF’s are just a bundled assortment of stocks, which reduces the risk as you do not invest in one company only. There are many ‘themes’ – but the most used way is to use them to invest in ‘everything’, for instance by buying the VWCE ETF, which tries to cover all the worlds stock markets for equities.

There is some dependency on where you live, taxes and such. Otherwise keep it simple, complexity leads to cost.

Pick one or two passively managed, low-cost, large-cap, global ETFs. My personal recommendations are:

    * VWRL: FTSE All-World UCITS ETF (0.22% TER)
    * IWDA: iShares Core MSCI World UCITS ETF (0.2% TER)

There are differences between the two but they are negligible. Strategy is only put money in there you’re OK not to touch for 4-7 years, and then just do that. There will be times where it goes into the red… the main thing is not to panic sell in these moments (that’s just selling low). [Read The Simple Path to Wealth by J.L. Collins for more info here]

In my case I have my emergency fund liquid savings account, then any extra savings get split into gambling money (i.e. single stocks) that I’m not gonna go hungry if I lose, and then one of these ETFs.

I won’t go into detail on the compounding etc. but in summary: for 5 years depositing into these funds the value of my holdings are currently 15% higher than the value I put in.

ETFs are not long term, you can get money back same day if you want

ETFs do not require a lot of research, there is something wrong here, individual stocks takes time to research and compare, main selling point of ETFs is to reduce DYOR risk via diversification, dont buy into more risk when trying to avoid risk

ETFs main risk is adoption, ironically, more money into passive instruments means less DYOR, which is bad for rational markets
