Analysis of Credit Card Spending and Rewards
Hello everyone,
I understand that the decision to choose a credit card is influenced by various factors. However, I am looking for insights from individuals who may be in a similar situation to mine.
On average, I spend around 20k annually on my credit card, with approximately 10k going towards dining out, including some business lunches. Additionally, I allocate anywhere from 1-5k for travel expenses, depending on the year. This typically includes at least one small flight and possibly a vacation. I am of the opinion that the points I will accrue from these expenses can offset the cost of the card.
However, I currently possess a BMO elite Mastercard, which is free and already provides me with numerous perks, such as rewards and lounge passes. As such, while I anticipate good returns with an Amex card, the comparison with zero returns from my BMO card makes it difficult to determine whether the $250 annual fee is worthwhile.
In light of this, I am seeking information from individuals who may be facing similar dilemmas. Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your assistance.

The gold card is $250/year, NOT per month. That would be insane. Tbh, no it is not worth it. You spend 10k/year eating out – you would definitely get more value using the Cobalt card than the gold card.
Worked for Amex Travel so I have a bit of insight. Cobalt card is the way to go with how much you eat out and how little you travel.
Gold and Platinum cards are really just for people who travel A LOT and/or want the status symbol of having those cards, you wonÔÇÖt come close to utilizing most of the benefits unless youÔÇÖre travelling significantly more than 1-5K worth a year.
Cobalt for eating out. IÔÇÖd also get the Gold, just for a sign up bonus. The Business Gold is actually a better sign up bonus than the personal. The multipliers on the Gold arenÔÇÖt great. Just get them for the SUB, keep a year and move into the next card.
Something worth looking into is ScotiabankÔÇÖs Gold AmEx. The rewards program they have with Scene is carried across their VISAs too. A common experience youÔÇÖll have with AmEx is swapping between the two cards, so it helps to have your points all go to the same program.
Gold Card is for travel insurance and perks.
plat is the better version of gold card.
I was using Cobalt then they offered me gold based on my spending… which isn’t too bad… i’m waiting for their plat card as i travel alot.
No go with either cobalt or plat. Based on your 10k eating out, cobalt for sure.
Gold is nice for the sign up bonus of 60,000 points and the $125 Great Canadian Rebate cashback. Add the $100 refundable hotel trick and your annual fee is $25 for the first year. I’d cancel it after that first year.
Not really, it’s honestly not a great card unless you get a good welcome bonus because the multipliers suck, there’s better out there.
AMEX Cobalt earns 5x points on restaurant/grocery purchases (capped at $2500 per month). If you want an AMEX, then I’d consider this instead based on the amount you spend eating out.
For the eating out portion the Cobalt would get you 50k points just on that, and could sign up on something like Great Canadian Rebates to get some cash back (currently $100 cash back for the cobalt on CCR). Another option may be the Scotiabank Gold Amex (currently $150 cash back on GCR). Also gets you 5x points on eating out and grocery (Scene points though), and you also get no foreign transaction fees, and a decent sign up bonus right now.
Go for Amex Plat and youÔÇÖll reap better value out of it. Or just go for the Cobalt
Do you shop at Costco? The CIBC Costco MC gives 3% back on restaurants, which works out to a few dollars less per month than the Cobalt, but could balance out if you use Costco a lot.
Got the gold when bonus was 80k after 6 months. Had to cancel before renewal. I do miss flexing the metal card haha but points are more important.
I think [this](https://www.finlywealth.com/calculator) could make the calculation easy if you just filter on amex. Generally speaking though Cobalt would perform better but I think Gold has a decent signup bonus too since Cobalt reduced theirs by 50% recently.
I assume you’re referring to the one Amex issues, but just in case, I would say avoid Scotibank Amex Gold.
I called them to dispute AirBnB, during pandemic when ABnB was doing shady stuff and doing anything they can to refuse refunds. They basically had instructions from Air BnB and refused to do anything about it. I disputed another charge on PayPal and got my money back in a week.
One thing Amex is known for is great customer service. If you sign up with Scotiabank, you get the regular Canadian bank treatment.
10k a year on eating out, dear god. IÔÇÖd be more focused on not spending $800/month on eating out rather than trying to min/max credit card points.

No AMEX product is ever worth it. Most establishments won’t take them due to excessive usage charges. I certainly won’t.
Can I ask how your BMO elite is free?
I have the gold for the travel credit and lounge access. With that being said, itÔÇÖs pretty limited. I also have the cobalt and the Bonvoy. Both of which are for sure keeper cards to me
unrelated, but how do we get the Elite MC free? I pay 120 year
Do cobalt if you increase your travel do platinum. Bmo WE is pretty good. I carry all 3
Yes absolutely…I too have a couple of World Elite Master Cards and Infinite Visa Cards …but love my Amex gold ..great points, very high limit, I never carry a balance and premium access to events and some other premium products and service..think monthly wine club. Customer service is outstanding…that being said a number of businesses do not accept Amex
No
Just wanted to mention that Amex closed my account without any reason or warning when I racked up thousands of $ in cashback. In Canada they donÔÇÖt let you redeem it right away like they do in the US. They of course made sure to wait for me to pay off my total card balance before closing the account.
Just figured IÔÇÖd put this here as a warning. I emailed the CEO office and they agreed to pay me $500 as a courtesy of the thousands of $ in cashback that I had accumulated. The CEO office could not find any reason why my account was closed and apologized. I asked if I could have the rest of the cashback and they refused and ghosted me lol.
Why do you spend $27 a day eating out?
