### Identifying Wasteful Spending Habits

After realizing that my finances were not where they should be, I decided to take a closer look at my expenses. I pulled out my laptop and meticulously went through all transactions dating back to 1st Jan. As I reviewed each transaction, I carefully categorized them into three groups.

### Categorizing Expenses

The first category included my regular monthly bills and outgoings. The second category consisted of expenses outside of the essentials, such as frivolous purchases like food and drinks. Lastly, the third category encompassed one-off expenses like car insurance or buying new shoes.

### Eye-Opening Revelations

Upon analyzing my spending habits, I was shocked to discover that I had been overspending significantly. In February alone, the combined total of categories 2 and 3 was 1.5 times higher than category 1. Even more alarming was the fact that category 2 nearly matched category 1, indicating a serious imbalance in my financial habits.

### Making Positive Changes

Realizing the need for a financial overhaul, I resolved to curb my spending on items like coffees, takeaways, and impulse buys. By reassessing my expenses and making meaningful changes, I hope to regain control of my finances and work towards a more secure financial future.

Done this a few weeks ago. Considering my loan, two credit cards, and phone bill, along with rent increase, I now have ZERO, and I mean ZERO, disposable income.

Frightening. I don’t know how I got here.

I have restarting doing overtime, and my disposable will go from zero to £1200 a month. I now have a plan.

    March: Pay off rent arrears.

April: Get out of £500 overdraft.

May: Keep another £500 for emergencies

Jun: Pay extra to credit union loan

July: Pay extra to credit union loan

Aug: Pay extra to credit union loan

Sep: Pay extra to credit union loan

Oct: Change monthly phone to SIM only. Pay extra to credit union loan

Nov: Pay extra to credit union loan

Dec: Pay extra to credit union loan

Jan: Pay extra to credit union loan

Feb: Pay extra to credit union loan

Mar: Pay extra to credit union loan

Apr: Pay extra to credit union loan

May: Pay extra to credit union loan

Jun: Pay extra to credit union loan

Jul: Pay extra to credit union loan

Aug: Use savings in credit union to pay remaining bills in both credit cards. I can access these savings now that loan is paid off.

At Aug 2024 stage, I’ll have no CC debt, no loan to pay, no overdraft to service, and access to ┬ú1000 emergency fund. From there, I’ll build it to 3-6 month worth of expenses etc…

Happy times! It gets addictive. I started tracking my spending 30
years ago when I was in a lot of debt and had a terrible credit score, bailiffs, a CCJ etc. It worked. I got out of debt and over the years IÔÇÖve gone on to earn a really good salary but I still track every penny. There is a plan for all of my income, including my ÔÇ£whatever I wantÔÇØ fund.

I know most people donÔÇÖt like it but my preference is to have all my regular outgoings happen in the first couple of days of the month. ItÔÇÖs very easy to see how much money you really have when that happens. That and just having a simple breakdown pinned to the fridge or something.

  • Jock-Stubbs

I do it all the time. I have a list of all the bills. How much they are each month and how much I transfer into the joint account each week. LetÔÇÖs me know what I have to blow on any thing I want, knowing bills are sorted and the kids have what they need. But the free money gets spent on the kids any way with trips n stuff so.. after fuel I get nowt ƒÿéƒÿé

Best things Ive ever done to curb my spending is to pay myself a weekly allowance. My pay check goes into one account and all my bills come out of it over the month. Every week I get a transfer into my spending account. It keeps me on track and doesnt let me blow a huge sum in week one of the month. There is also a third account (nicknamed Big Spender) that gets money put into every month for opportunities that are too good to missfavourite bands, last minute trips to the seaside to visit friends, etc. It turns into the Xmas gift fund in September.

I actually have quite the nice slush fund in the main bank account but am saving all that for when it goes tits up ƒñú

  • HowHardCanItBeReally

Basically what I do, I know every single bill of by heart and when it’s due out, kind of sad really but I’ve been in debt and hated it.

  • GazzamanRules

There are apps/bank accounts that can help with this. I’m a fan of moneyhub

Its something I need to do. I have a decent pay, I have a very low cost of living, I have no debt, but somehow the ┬ú2000 a month I’d like to live on is gone before half the month is over.
