## Seeking Advice on Tax Deductions for Contract Employees in Tokyo

Greetings,

I am currently employed as a contract worker for a company based in Tokyo. My contract is on a yearly basis, renewing each year. As the company does not provide insurance, I am enrolled in the national health insurance system. On a monthly basis, I submit an invoice to the company for the agreed upon contract amount.

I am interested in exploring the possibility of tax deductions for various work-related expenses, such as my work phone and phone bill, as well as business attire like suits. However, my understanding of tax deductions and tax laws in general is limited, and I am seeking guidance on what I may be eligible for.

Moreover, I am looking for recommendations on reputable tax advisors in Tokyo whom I can consult with regarding my tax situation. Any assistance or advice in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

by “contract employee” you mean that you are a 業務委託 or 有期労働契約?

I think you mean the former but the distinction is important as the former is **not an employee** but the latter is an employee.

Yes, you are eligible for work related expenses as deductions. Your phone can be an expense as far as you use it for business purposes, but suits are not deductible. There’s a list of things which are generally expenses but it depends on your business to some extent.

[This article](https://www.freee.co.jp/kb/kb-blue-return/account-title/#content2) should help get you started on understanding what is and isn’t counted as expenses.

Incidentally, you are not a “contract employee” but a “contractor”.

If you are sending them an invoice, you are not an employee. You’re an independent contractor / sole proprietor.
