Their presence not only facilitates commerce but also fosters relationships among residents, enhancing the social fabric of our communities.

That’s why I remain a staunch advocate for small businesses across different communities and regions of our country. From vibrant local cafés and unique clothing boutiques to beloved bookshops and traditional butchers, these diverse enterprises offer much more than mere products or services. They mold the identity of our towns and establish connections that weave us together, strengthening our sense of belonging.

Recent Support Initiatives by the Welsh Government

Just recently, the Welsh Government announced a robust support package aimed at alleviating the burden of business rates for small businesses—an additional £116 million allocation. This is particularly noteworthy as business rates in Wales will soon be revised to align with current property valuations, making a tangible difference in the financial landscape for many local enterprises.

Expected Changes in Business Rates

Come April next year, the revised valuations will result in many small businesses seeing a reduction in their rates, while others may face increases. However, to soften the blow, any business experiencing a rise of more than £300 will have that increase phased in gradually over a two-year period. Additionally, small shops will look forward to a new lower rate, collectively reducing their bills by approximately £20 million. This is in conjunction with the Welsh Government, which already commits £250 million annually in ongoing business rates relief.

Benefits for Our High Streets

The initiative is splendid news, as roughly two-thirds of all properties in Wales will either incur no business rates or benefit from some form of relief. This positive shift is particularly encouraging for our local high streets, fostering an environment where small businesses can thrive and prosper.

Investment Summit: A Step Towards Future Growth

Many of you may have caught wind of the recent Investment Summit organized by the First Minister, attended by over 300 senior business leaders from around 30 countries. This summit was a pivotal event designed to highlight Wales’ competitive advantages as an attractive destination for investment.

Impact of the Investment Summit

As a result of the summit, more than 170 businesses engaged with Wales for the first time. Since its launch last summer, the total investment linked to this initiative has soared to £16 billion, with projections indicating the creation of over 10,000 jobs within the next year. These are high-quality roles that have the potential to uplift individuals from economic hardship and foster more robust, prosperous communities.

Recognition of NHS Workers

In the Senedd this week, I sought an update from the Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care regarding the recent national agreement focused on improving pay and working conditions for NHS staff. This agreement stands as fair recognition of the hard work, dedication, and commitment exhibited by over 6,000 invaluable healthcare workers—predominantly women—who have been unwaveringly supported by their trade union, UNISON.

Impact of Enhanced Pay Agreements

As a proud member of UNISON Cymru, I take satisfaction in witnessing fair work standards realized not just as a concept but as a practice. The Welsh Government has confirmed that this agreement results from effective social partnership practices, ensuring that staff receive due compensation for their essential work, with payments expected to commence by next July. This initiative exemplifies the significant impact our Welsh Government is making for the workforce in Wales.

A Decade of Progressive Legislation

Recently, we commemorated ten years since Wales took a pioneering step in the UK by introducing the ‘deemed consent’ initiative, which has been instrumental in saving the lives of countless individuals in need of organ transplants. This pivotal legislation has not only saved lives but also transformed or significantly changed the futures of many, with other parts of the UK now following Wales’ lead.

Encouraging Organ Donation Registration

To date, over 2,000 organs have been donated in Wales since 2015, and currently, 50% of the Welsh population has registered their wishes with the NHS. It’s crucial to remember that organ donation is a personal choice; individuals can select which organs to donate or even decide to opt-out altogether. World AIDS Day Observance

Last week, we recognized World AIDS Day, during which I had the honor of hosting this year’s Fast Track Cymru event in the Senedd. This gathering served as an important occasion to acknowledge our progress, engage with dedicated teams from across Wales, and reaffirm our collective goal of eradicating new HIV transmissions by 2030.

Continuing Progress in HIV Support

As a Fast Track Nation, Wales is making great strides through our HIV Action Plan, ensuring better accessibility to testing, treatment, and support. Despite our advancements, we recognize there is still more work to be done. During the event, my colleagues and I wore red ribbons to remember those we have lost, stand in solidarity with those living with HIV, and recommit ourselves to a future free from stigma.
