    Incredibly misleading.

The pets considered filter option isnt applied very well and you can find many more properties that will say ÔÇ£pets consideredÔÇØ in the listing that wont appear on the filtered search

  • PointHrO

My partner and I got knocked back from multiple rental properties in a row last year despite good incomes, no kids, good rental history but we had our dog listed in the pets section.

We were getting desperate as our lease was nearly up where we were currently living and the owner wanting to sell, so we decided to take the pet off the application, as soon as we did that the next 3 places we applied for all offered us the lease.

I was actually annoyed we had to fib about that to get a place but the alternative was living in a hotel or something until we got a rental. Giving up the dog was not something we were willing to live with.

  • belugatime

They should get rid of the option for states where it’s required to accept pets, as people without knowledge of the law might think they can only rent properties with the option ticked.

If I was a property manager advertising a property I wouldn’t tick that option. Less people applying with pets that the landlord may prefer not to have.

For the record, as a landlord I don’t mind tenants having pets and we have properties currently tenanted with pets. I just know some landlords prefer not to have pets. I do get worried with cats though hearing some horror stories.

  • BBAus

Nsw used to have a separate pet bond. A lot more landlords would consider pets if that came back, as the current bond really doesn’t cover much at all.

  • RobertSmith1979

You just lie about pets and move on with life. Been doing it before they changed the laws.

  • Splunkzop

I have three rental properties and never deny pets.

  • antihero790

We rent our investment property out as pets required. We aren’t picky though, dogs, cats, turtles, snakes, rats, whatever. I don’t want a tenant where I can’t ask for updates on their pets.

  • Flangella-Fairyfloss

I donÔÇÖt mind dogs so much but cats are terrible. We bought a house nearly 6 year ago which was previously a rental. We got the floor boards sanded back and stained throughout the whole house before we moved in, as we wanted a different stain and when we first walked through I could smell cat pee even though the place was spotless. However, for nearly 5 years I would smell the faint aroma of cat pee, which, would be quite strong in the bathroom whenever we turned on the central heating. It is only recently I realised the place no longer has that smell. Clearly the woman who rented the house before we bought it let her cat/s piss around the place and into the bathroom heater vent etc, bloody disgusting and a good way to ruin a nice house.

  • EmotionalAd5920

i really donÔÇÖt understand. if i damage the house or property i pay for it, if my dog does it, i pay for it. why dont they want pets?

  • __Mr-Plenty

Hot take, it is perfectly fine if the landlord does not want pets, it is their property.

  • crappy-pete

    Pointless piece

We had to rent from late 2021 and for most of last year whilst renovating. It wasn’t hard to find a place with two dogs even though just about none said they’d allow pets

Yes I know it will be different now in terms of volume of applicants but the point being just because the ad doesn’t state pets allowed it doesn’t mean they aren’t

Most of our rentals have pets and I don’t think the ads ever say pets allowed.

  • SeveredEyeball

Ok. So stop buying pets when renting. Duh.

  • rasmith0311

I am not a landlord. But if I was renting out my apartment, I wouldn’t want it to stink like dogs if I rented it out for a few years. Or for the pets to scratch, piss or shit on the carpet. It’s the reason I dont’ have a pet.

If you want a pet, buy your own place and they can ruin your property

  • AcrobaticLecture1901

The issue is that the damage the pets can do will often be greater than the bond amount.

Rent to foreigners, they will never bother to pay up to $10000 to bring their pet into the country or take it home, so the chances of them sneaking one in is ~0%.

It just always strikes me – how many young people living in shared situations have pets. Why would you want to tie yourself down with another mouth to feed, completely restricting your mobility and competitiveness in the housing market. Just don’t do it. I’ve seen an application for 4 unrelated people and two pets in a 3 bedroom house. I just laughed. 6 animals in <100sqm, you’re joking.

  • udum2021

Never been a landlord myself; but its all within landlord’s rights to choose whatever renters they like to have in their property.

  • loggerheader

There is so much demand that when it comes down to a choice between tenants with pets v tenants without, youÔÇÖd have to think owners will side with people whoÔÇÖs donÔÇÖt have them unfortunately.
