# Struggling After Separation: Coping with Trauma and Mental Health Difficulties
I recently went through a separation a few months ago, and it has really thrown me off balance. The past year has been particularly difficult for me, as I witnessed a traumatic event where someone was shot and killed during my going away party. This experience has been haunting me ever since, and I have been struggling to come to terms with it.
During my time in the military, I attempted to seek help for my mental health struggles, but unfortunately, my commander wanted me out due to legal troubles I was facing. Despite my efforts, most of my claims for assistance were denied, and I am currently receiving only 30% disability rating (10% for back pain, 10% for flat feet, and 10% for tinnitus). Additionally, I have suffered from two traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) while in service, and I have also applied for PTSD benefits, which have been deferred.
# Feeling Overwhelmed and Desperate for Help
This combination of traumatic experiences and lack of adequate support has left me feeling like my life is spiraling out of control. Recently, I found myself at a breaking point when a disagreement with my girlfriend led me to contemplate taking my own life. The fog of confusion and despair that surrounds me feels suffocating, making it hard for me to see a way out of this darkness.
Despite having a job, I find it increasingly challenging to work with others as a team due to the mental and emotional turmoil I am facing. At the young age of 23, I can’t help but feel like a failure for not being able to cope with these challenges more effectively.

Get a VSO and start going to the VA for psych help. I did and got 70% PTSD. I had suicidal thoughts and went to a lot of therapy. I am also an alcoholic (14 years sober) which helped my rating. Get help and good luck.
messaged you

Say this with me:
“I acknowledge that I’ve been struggling since I separated a few months ago, but I’m proud of the steps I’ve taken to seek help and file for my benefits. Despite setbacks, I’ve secured a 30% disability rating, which is a start.
I recognize that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed, and I am not weak for feeling this way. I value myself and deserve support, so I’ll keep reaching out to mental health professionals and connecting with support groups.
I am determined to keep pushing for my benefits, gathering more evidence, and appealing decisions. My life has value, and I owe it to myself to keep fighting. Every small step I take is a move toward healing and stability. I can do this, one day at a time.”
Seek the help you truly deserve. Be it from a family, friend, buddy, doctor , mental health professional, VSO, or the VA. I trust that you can do this!
Now, with regards to the denial and deferred claims
To better assist you with your situation, it would be really helpful if you could share a redacted copy of your denial letter. Please make sure to remove your name, Social Security number, address, and any QR codes. This will allow us to provide more specific guidance based on the details of your case.

I’m same age. Same shit. The one thing I hold onto is the older guys here saying that it does get better. One day we’re gonna look back at this as just a bump in the road. Hang in there man
It gets a better than farther u get from trauma. For myself iraq was 18 years ago and policing i retired from 2 years ago. Seen a lot of bad. It doesn’t go away. I think the farther away u get from it, the easier or the more manageable symptoms are.
As far as benefits. Keep up with it. Everyone has to jump thru hoops. I have plenty of claims over the last 8 years or so. Little by little as things get worse and u have more evidence and can show the chronic nature of the conditions., the more likely a claim will be approved. 23 is your man. I had the world by the balls then, you’re just starting out, hang in there and keep fighting for good days.
Sometimes you need to exaggerate with the VA in your appt because they just don’t get it unless you exaggerate it… also it sounds like you may have gotten an OTH I could be wrong but I recommend requesting an upgrade through the VA if you did get one, if you got a general under honorable like I did (I refused the Covid vaccine) 🙄 then still put in for an upgrade you can do it 6 months after EAS and the VA almost always will upgrade it, only need for an attorney when upgrading is probably and OTH or worse but mainly with a dishonorable I’d say. That being said, file as many things as you can and if they get denied you need to appeal it and go back… appealing it could possibly get you the rating you should’ve gotten to begin with, some VA people sitting behind the desk looking at your claims will just deny shit without even looking at it, some will approve most things just from reading it! But don’t give up do whatever you can to get that rating up, getting to 80% isn’t that hard so I’d do everything in your power to push for it no matter what the VA says… I got 100% after 16 months after EAS I filed within the first 3 months and after 8 months got 60 then 70-80-90-100 and it took them 16 months altogether
