# Exploring Potential Additional Benefits for Family with Disabled Members

Looking for clarification on whether we should/could be receiving more benefits.
My husband is a disabled veteran. He has received SSDI since the 90ÔÇÖs.
As dependents we received additional SS until the kids were grown.

My oldest is disabled and has been since before he was 18. He will be 30 this year and IÔÇÖve had legal guardianship of him since shortly after he turned 18. (Took a while for court and paperwork.)

He receives SSDI (?) equal to the dependents share and SSI supplemental and has Medicare/Medicaid.
My sonÔÇÖs disability is mental/psychological and has not stopped him from procreating. He has 2 kids.
We have never filed for anything additional for them.

He lives with his girlfriend and in exchange we have both grandkids living with us 5-6 days a week. They just canÔÇÖt handle the kids and itÔÇÖs easier for us to get the older one to school (Headstart) and activities every day. TheyÔÇÖve lived with us since they were babies. My son and his girlfriend take the kids most weekends for a night or two. Honestly we need the break and the kids need some mommy and daddy time.

The oldest one will be in Kindergarten next year so now we are making decisions on how to legally proceed so she can still catch the bus from our house and go to the school closest to us since they live with us. We believe shared legal guardianship will be best. It will allow me to make decisions at school, make medical decisions without having to call Mom for every decision (I take them to almost all appointments), and will allow them to continue living with us and go to school near us. (Same school system, just different elementary school.)

Is there any additional benefits we could apply for? Either because their Dad is disabled or because they have been living with us for 4.5 years and weÔÇÖre finally making it legal.
Can they get part of the dependents share from my husband?
Can my son get more SSI based on the 3 of them instead of just himself?
It costs a lot to raise the kids and we are really starting to feel it. My sonÔÇÖs entire SS goes to rent and his girlfriend pays the bills, food, gas.

We checked with VA and we canÔÇÖt get anything extra for them unless we adopt the kids. This is a future consideration but weÔÇÖre going to try the guardianship first.

I guess IÔÇÖm looking for the proper terminology to ask for additional benefits and if it should go through my son (their Dad) or my husband (Grandpa and soon to be legal guardian).
