Abstract

This seminar intends to delve into the challenges and potential strategies for examining new ways of organizing Supply Chain (SC) relationships through digital platforms. While digital platforms are well-established in the consumer realm, their applications for streamlining SC interactions are only beginning to emerge. The exploration of these applications proves to be intriguing from both theoretical and practical viewpoints. Understanding their mechanisms requires in-depth contemplation on the unit of analysis and observation, as well as the emerging contracts and relationships. It is imperative to foster interdisciplinary collaboration to explore the interplay between SC transactional/relational dynamics and the emerging structures facilitated by digital platforms, which are characterized as ecosystemic and combinatorial. The presentation will showcase the progress and outcomes of a case study analysis of a digital platform designed for sustainable supply chain governance. The study adopts critical realist assumptions and draws on theoretical foundations such as Legitimacy Theory, Organizational Information Processing Theory, and Strategic Alignment Model. By examining the differences between digital platforms and existing SC sustainability management models through the case study findings, the presentation will illustrate the potential for ecosystem-like coevolutionary dynamics with buyer-led approaches. Additionally, the discussion will shed light on the impact of institutional pressures in this context, while elaborating on the rationale behind key methodological decisions to encourage dialogue on the merits and challenges of non-positivistic research methodologies. Finally, the presentation will conclude with reflections on collaborative efforts for sustainable SC governance, while exploring the role of digital platforms in this realm.
