Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility Launches ClimateReadyVT to Help Small Businesses Adapt to Changing Climate

Vermont Business Magazine

Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility (VBSR), a nonprofit business association dedicated to creating a just, thriving, and transformative economy for all people and the planet, has introduced ClimateReadyVT. This innovative program aims to assist small businesses in Vermont in adapting to the changing climate and building resilience against climate-related disruptions. Registration for ClimateReadyVT is now open, and the first cohort will commence in early November.

VBSR, with its extensive experience in climate mitigation policy development and educational programming, as well as its ability to bring businesses together for collective action, is well-positioned to address the pressing challenge of climate change impact on Vermont’s small businesses and the wider economy.

VBSR’s Executive Director, Roxanne Vought, emphasized the crucial role played by small businesses in Vermont’s economy. She noted that these businesses, particularly those in rural areas, have disproportionately borne the brunt of natural disasters, climate-related public health threats, and extreme weather events. In response, VBSR is delighted to offer the ClimateReadyVT program free of charge, as a means of supporting and strengthening small businesses that provide essential goods, services, and local jobs while promoting sustainable economic development and climate justice in Vermont.

ClimateReadyVT is open to all businesses located in Vermont with 50 employees or fewer. The program aims to help these businesses adapt to the changing climate and prepare for future climate-related disruptions. Participants will benefit from the guidance of expert facilitators, a community of business owners and managers, cutting-edge resources, and a network of business support organizations. Priority will be given to businesses that are BIPOC, LGBTQ+, woman-owned or managed, and those situated in rural areas.

The inaugural cohort of ClimateReadyVT will consist of 20 businesses. Throughout a series of eight virtual sessions and one in-person session, these businesses will undertake a comprehensive climate risk assessment, identify strategies for mitigating hazards, become familiar with government resources and professional services, learn about supporting their teams during disruptions, acquire tools for mental health and wellness sustainability, and develop a personalized “Road Map to Resilience” for their operations.

VBSR has partnered with Reframe Lab, along with state and national climate adaptation and resilience strategists and practitioners, to co-create and facilitate the ClimateReadyVT program. By employing a human-centered approach, Reframe Lab assists organizations of all sizes in managing complex changes, fostering innovation, and flourishing through transformation.

ClimateReadyVT is made possible by the generous support of Mascoma Bank, a certified B Corporation and community-focused bank committed to positive change. Additional support for the program comes from corporate and individual contributors to VBSR’s Expanding Our Movement Fund.
