In my experience which is not identical to yours but as a German, residing in the Netherlands my company is based in Malta, my employer has to follow the Dutch tax system and has to establish an entity here to be able to comply with the regulations here and I too pay my taxes here.
If I was residing in Germany, my employer would need to meet the German tax system.
Now your situation is a bit unique.
Since it’s not a full term but rather a limited term.
Normally speaking you pay taxes where you reside more than 6months
Now it’s almost end of January, so I not sure if you move let’s say mid February for example and still keep it under 6 months, and pay taxes in Portugal as you are till end of contract.
Maybe that’s a way to get around it ?
