The Resignation of SEC Lawyers in Crypto Case

Two SEC lawyers, Michael Welsh and Joseph Watkins, have recently resigned from the agency due to their involvement in a crypto case that included “materially false and misleading representations.”

The pair were reportedly given an ultimatum to resign or be fired following their roles in the lawsuit against Digital Licensing Inc., also known as DEBT Box.

This news was first reported by Bloomberg on April 22, with sources confirming that Welsh and Watkins officially left the U.S. SEC earlier this month.

The resignations came after Federal District Court Judge Robert Shelby criticized the SEC’s actions in the DEBT Box case, where Welsh served as the primary attorney and Watkins led the investigative team.

In July, DEBT Box and its founders were accused of defrauding investors of over $49 million. Welsh and Watkins argued for freezing the company’s assets, claiming that they were being moved offshore. The Director of the SEC’s Division of Enforcement, Gurbir Grewal, issued an apology for the misconduct, leading to the court ruling in favor of DEBT Box for legal fees compensation. As a result, federal prosecutors moved to dismiss the case without prejudice, prompting DEBT Box to sue the regulator for damages amounting to $1.5 million.
