Observing Indigenous Peoples Day at Virginia Tech

To the university community,

Today, on this significant day, we come together to observe Indigenous Peoples Day at Virginia Tech. This year, our observance holds even more weight as we reflect on the impact of our institution’s founding on Native peoples. Through our adoption of land acknowledgement and labor recognition statements, we have been given a precious opportunity to delve into our university’s history and gain a deeper understanding of the Tutelo/Monacan people, who have long served as the stewards of the land in Blacksburg.

Their enduring ties to the land and its bountiful resources have played a vital role in supporting our mission, and it is our duty to honor the legacy of traditional peoples, both past and present. Our commitment to InclusiveVT, a pledge to serve through community, diversity, and excellence, drives us to recognize and support Native communities.

We are grateful for the leadership of President Tim Sands, who acknowledges the significance of this year’s event with the formalization of our land acknowledgement and labor recognition statements. He emphasizes that the histories of Native communities are intertwined with the foundation of Virginia Tech and are sustained by our Indigenous students, staff, and faculty. To truly honor their experiences, we must continue to meet their evolving needs and support the sovereignty of Native Nations.

We invite all of you to partake in the events being organized today. You can explore the captivating art exhibits by Native students at Newman Library and the Laurie Steelink exhibit at Moss Arts Center, which will be available throughout the day. Start your morning with a thought-provoking conversation with Rob Nelson about reclaiming queer Indigenous love at Newman Library. Additionally, we encourage you to take the time this semester to visit our Indigenous Community Center, where you can meet our diverse Indigenous faculty, staff, and students. It is an excellent opportunity to learn more about the land that supports Virginia Tech’s mission and vision, especially during Native and Indigenous Heritage month.

As part of our ongoing commitment to InclusiveVT, the second Monday of October each year is reserved for this observance.
