Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission Nearing Approval of Bitcoin ETF
Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission is on the verge of approving the first batch of spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds in the region, marking a significant milestone for the city’s crypto market.
Hong Kong is poised to greenlight the inaugural set of spot Bitcoin ETFs by Apr. 15, according to reports from Tencent News that cite sources close to the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission. Initially, the regulator planned to approve just four spot Bitcoin ETFs in the first wave.
However, recent developments indicate that at least two applications did not meet the criteria for crypto asset management in Hong Kong. The timeline and entities set to receive authorization to offer the initial spot Bitcoin ETFs in the region remain uncertain.
Several Hong Kong-based firms and mainland China proxies have expressed interest in launching spot crypto exchange-traded funds. China Southern Fund, Harvest Fund, Jiashi Fund, Huaxia Fund, and Southern Fund have all filed applications through their Hong Kong branches and are awaiting regulatory clearance.
Following the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong’s approval of the first batch of spot Bitcoin ETFs, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange will require approximately two weeks to prepare for product listing and related activities.
The potential approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in Hong Kong may come three months after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission greenlit the initial batch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. Currently, the top 10 spot Bitcoin ETFs manage around $57 billion, with the top three accounting for more than 88% of that amount.
