It depends on your bank. Check their website.
I can confirm that JP Post, SMBC, and Chiba Bank will close your account. They verify via MyNumber Card. DonÔÇÖt know about the others.
You may be able to leave it open if you can declare a new local address in Japan, likes friends or relatives address and update that in the bank record. Though IÔÇÖm not sure itÔÇÖs legal.
I’m about to leave Japan. There is no legal requirement to close your bank account, it all comes down to each individual bank’s policies. And they can be different for Japanese vs. foreigner…some banks will allow Japanese nationals to keep the account open and change their address to a foreign address as long as they can prove they are leaving Japan for specific reason that is meant to be temporary i.e. studies, international job posting, etc ..
Personally I’m closing one of my accounts, and keeping another one open, in case I need to do any unforeseen banking operations remotely. By the way for retirement allowance it is typically allowed to provide a foreign bank account, as long as it’s under your name.
I’m definitely moving my savings out of Japan before I leave. And like someone commented above, cancel your credit cards if you have any.
It always depends on them, but better to contact them to clarify some things like these.
I can confirm that Prestia will allow accounts to remain open after leaving Japan. I have personally done this more than once.
You can confirm this for yourself on the [Prestia address change form](https://www.smbctb.co.jp/en/support/updatingprofile/pdf/juhentdks.pdf).
At least for JP Bank and Prestia, the accounts will be restricted once the banks record of your visa validity period expires and they cannot confirm a new one. They will hold your balances and money can still be accessed at ATMs and viewed online, but many functions will cease to work. If you leave, say 1 year before your visa expires, the bank will not bother you until that one year passes and then they will demand a new visa or residence card and if you don’t comply the account will be restricted.
There may also be a distinction between newer bank accounts and older bank accounts. I have an older account and they have never asked to verify my resident card at any time after opening the account – but with newer accounts I think they have to due to a change in regulations.
