Noah Brown’s Transformative Journey at East Carolina University
Introduction to a Student’s Expectation
When Noah Brown embarked on his academic adventure at East Carolina University in August 2021, he entered with a singular expectation. His mindset was straightforward.
“I had expected to go in, get my degree and get out,” he stated candidly during a recent interview.
His initial goal was clear and conventional: to focus solely on his studies and earn his degree as efficiently as possible.

Unexpected Transformations
However, as Noah progressed through his university years, his expectations were challenged and ultimately transformed. By the time he completed his studies, he had left an indelible mark in the College of Business. Originally a marketing major from Apex, North Carolina, Noah exhibited an intense commitment to leadership and community involvement during his time at ECU.
He was actively engaged in numerous extracurricular activities. Among these were the investment club and the prestigious COB Dean’s Student Leadership Council.
Involvement in Collegiate DECA
Yet, it was his engagement with the Collegiate DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chapter that highlighted his tenure at ECU.
“I got involved in Collegiate DECA as a sophomore due to a friend’s recommendation,” Noah explained. “I then sought to be involved in something on campus and landed on the opportunities that DECA could provide for myself and others.”
His involvement quickly escalated. As he made his way onto the organization’s executive board and eventually the presidency, Noah played a crucial role in expanding the chapter significantly. Where once there were merely 15 students, he helped grow the membership to over 50 dedicated individuals.
Leadership and Growth
Reflecting on his journey, Noah recognized a pivotal strategy that contributed to the organization’s expansion: assembling a team of leaders who excelled in their respective areas.
“The greatest step I took to growing the organization was by strategically setting up the executive team with leaders who were stronger than me in each of their respective roles,” he remarked. He cited individuals like William Marriott as exemplars, showcasing what it truly meant to be a servant leader.
Achievements at DECA Conference
The culmination of Noah’s efforts became vividly apparent at the Collegiate DECA International Career Development Conference in San Francisco earlier this year. Not only did he manage to secure funding for ECU’s chapter, allowing 50 students to attend the event, but he also provided coaching and support for the team. The results were outstanding: one student clinching first place, two earning second-place honors, alongside 13 finalist recognitions and 20 medals.
Personal Connections and Legacy
Another significant aspect of Noah’s journey was the deep personal connection to his grandmother, Sue Brown, who graduated in 1964.
“My grandmother was a huge supporter of me attending ECU,” Noah revealed. “Sharing my ECU experience with her has been a joy. Many of the same locations she visited in her time at ECTC are some that I frequent as well. When I was recognized in StockNotes (COB magazine), she was the first one I called.”
This shared legacy added emotional weight to Noah’s accomplishments and transformed what could have been a solitary academic journey into a shared familial experience of pride and connection.
Moving Forward: A New Chapter Begins
Having recently completed his undergraduate education, Noah has embarked on the next phase of his life, taking on the role of chief of staff for ECU Board of Trustee member Rich Balot. Reflecting on his time at university, Noah acknowledges that his experience exceeded his initial expectations in profound ways.
“I look back on transformational growth and finding my purpose. Both have been far more valuable than just my degree alone,” he stated.
This sentiment underscores a key takeaway from his journey: education is not solely about obtaining a qualification but is also about personal growth, leadership, and connections made that last a lifetime.
