I applied to this program fueled by my commitment to addressing the significant housing challenges in Flagstaff. Affordable housing is characterized by the principle of spending no more than 30% of one’s monthly gross income on housing costs. According to the city’s 10-Year Housing Plan, a staggering 27% of homeowners and 57% of renters in Flagstaff are currently housing cost burdened. My project during the fellowship focused on developing strategies to preserve existing housing and build resilience in some of Flagstaff’s older neighborhoods. By utilizing SWOT analysis, I explored demographics, crime statistics, housing values, and the balance between homeowners and renters. Understanding these elements is crucial for creating effective policies that support our community’s housing needs.

The Value of MICD’s Resources

The MICD provided extensive financial support, covering all expenses related to the fellowship. The access to seasoned researchers and practitioners has been invaluable for my role as your mayor. I continue to compile notes and insights garnered throughout the semester and look forward to collaborating with city staff and local partners to bring these ideas to fruition.
