## Credit card situation with Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Club

I currently have a credit card with Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Club, which was originally issued by Citi Bank before it ceased operations in Japan in 2015. The credit card is a Delta Skymiles card with an annual membership fee of ¥18,500. However, since Delta closed down their operations in Narita and ceased service to Singapore and other Asian destinations, the benefits of the card have significantly decreased. As I rarely travel to the US, the card no longer provides the value it once did.

## Concerns about changing credit cards

Unfortunately, Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Club does not allow me to switch to a different credit card without mileage benefits and a lower annual fee. This means I would have to cancel the Skymiles card and reapply for a new one, which is a daunting task given my retired status and lack of stable income. I am worried that this process may not be successful considering my current financial situation.

## Considering a debit card alternative

Given the limitations with my current credit card situation, I am exploring the option of switching to a debit card. One option that has caught my attention is the Nexus debit card. I am curious to hear from others who have used this card and their experiences with it. Additionally, I am interested in comparing other alternatives such as Wise to see which option would be the most suitable for my needs.

You don’t have to cancel your existing card before you apply for another. Try to apply for another card within the same group as the card you have currently. If you get approved, cancel the high-fee card.

If that doesn’t work and you shop a lot at Amazon, you might want to try for an Amazon card. You need to wait 6 months until the first rejection rolls off your credit report, but try that. It’s SMBC so maybe that works in your favor.

If that still doesn’t work, wait another 6 months and try Rakuten or EPOS.

Having only your retirement income doesn’t mean you will be rejected. You likely have a good credit history, own your own house, and have a stable retirement income. These are positive things.

That nexus card is not a debit card. It’s a deposit based credit card. Meaning your credit limit is the amount of deposit you pay. You get the deposit back when/if you cancel your card/account with them. Though if you are going that way, check out the LIFE deposit credit card. Much better then nexus. They have a good app as well, and you can collect points. It’s also compatible with apple pay if you use it.

I mean international students without zero income manage to get credit cards fresh of the boat (I helped several students after only 1-3 months in Japan back in the day). It is the matter of checking right boxes in the application rather than your income.

You only have once credit card?
It’s always worth having a second from a different brand, stored separately from the other cards, in case your main one gets lost/stolen.

Therefore, try applying for an “easy” card – one of the same SMTC brand or Rakuten/Seiyu or Amazon.

Any debit card from your normal bank will work fine.
