Interactive Brokers Japan (IBSJ). Japan subsidiary of US brokerage. Able to fund in USD or yen (which will be converted to USD when placing trades/orders without fees). No restrictions on buying US stocks and ETFs that they offer. And ,as a US taxpayer, you will receive a 1099 from them.
The best thing to do is exchange your yen to USD and invest in a US brokerage account.
Besides misunderstanding in PFIC, It doesn’t make any difference. Your buying power is the same. It’s not like there is a discount for buying in yen because the yen is weaker.
Your best option is to exchange yen to USD and invest in a us based brokerage.
Few if any Japanese brokers will let Americans buy American stocks; you’re stuck with Japan-domiciled individual stocks and mutual funds. You’re better off sending your money back to the US and buying your US stocks there. With the yen so low, now might be a good time to invest in some Japanese funds that will benefit if the yen strengthens. But, as you probably know, attempting to time any market is not a simple thing. I’d just invest a fixed amount of yen into a mixture of US stocks/funds (in the US) and Japanese stocks/funds (in Japan) and let them grow.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I have brokerage accounts in the US and am simply trying to avoid using yen to pay for things in dollars at the moment. Have any of you (US taxpayers) purchased Japanese stocks through a Japan-based brokerage like Nomura? If you did, and had to report at tax time, do you have any advice based on your experience?
