Probably AML checks.
Depends on how your bank is doing it.
If itÔÇÖs in person with a personal banker, you could be waiting for an appointment. If they do it with a centralised entity onboarding team, itÔÇÖll be going into a workflow queue.
If you do have a very simple ownership structure for the company, the actual process to open the account will be quite fast, itÔÇÖs just a matter of waiting for the right person to help you.
I did it at ANZ last week – It was done overnight within 24 hours.
The delay was because I had to get a form witnessed for my internet banking access.
They also opened a personal bank account at the same time but were able to set up the internet banking access straight away because I had an old inactive internet banking logon from about 10 years ago that they could re-assign to the new account, and a witness isnt needed to sign the form for the personal internet banking.
Now in saying that, I did have to wait a week for the appointment but it was mostly all done with the representative in the branch in about 90 minutes.
To make the Anti Money Laundering Verification process fast, I took in a recent personal letter from the IRD, my electric utility bill from contact energy, and my drivers license which is new enough to have an address field shown on it.
The representative was able to confirm my company address and certificate of incorporation from the companies website and since that matched the personal address information, it was quite easy.
Just lots of repeating numbers and typing information together into the computer system.
I took advice from this subreddit as to which was the best bank to open a business account since i wanted to change away from the local credit union (they dont do business accounts very well).
Reddit commentors recommended ASB but after filling out the forms on their website I was at a dead end and it took two weeks for them to call me back.
I found I didnt like BNZ when we tried to bank with them about 8 years ago – they just sit you in a booth and you video conference someone in a call centre. I wanted to build a relationship.
So i decided to walk into ANZ Napier and make an appointment – the soonest they could was 2 weeks away but they had an open slot in the nearby hastings branch so I took that one which was still a week.
Its purely backlog. Most banks will only have 1-3 local business bankers and they will be busy doing ‘real’ deals that can be quite complex and can easily take a full day to asses in appropriate detail, opening a sole trader account is very low on the piority list and they just wont have many spare hours to get to it.
We frown upon businesses in NZ. Only housing speculation is acceptable
Had 4 weeks for a new company with BNZ recently as an existing business customer. It was one of the worst experiences with a bank ever. WeÔÇÖve switched banks as a result.
I can only speak for the bank I work for and colleagues I know who do this role – generally there is a frontline worker you speak to and they gather all the appropriate information required.
They will need to establish you in the system after speaking to you and do all of their checks. Someone from the back office will then pick up the case and ready the appropriate documentation to be sent to you for completion.
It may seem like it should be done on the spot but banks are unfortunately obliged to verify everyone involved in the business which may include ID documentation from multiple parties and also carry out the required checks on all parties.
Frontline workers are also expected to assist many customers other than you in the day so generally donÔÇÖt have an hour or two to devote to one person.
A fair timeframe for turnaround is generally a week providing the customer returns the documents in a timely manner.
Because we are stuck in ancient times here
Open it up in Wise and itÔÇÖs ready the same day. I might have a re_feral c_de somewhere for ya
> Bankers of Reddit, why
FTFY
Guessing you went to Westpac, it fired a lot of staff.
AML is hard, especially when there’s multiple people with signing authority over the account.
Used to work in this role. For the same reason everyone is saying and also…
Easiest way to sell insurance is to get you in person. Your business account earns very little for the bank. All the extras earn more. If your bum is in a seat, you can be sold to! I hated this aspect of it. That’s why I quit.
Used to be a business banker 5 years ago, not much has changed in the AML space in that time and the time to create and open an account including AML checks (provided all documents were provided as required for AML) would be 15-30 minutes depending on the number of entities you involved and whether IÔÇÖve had a coffee and nothing else going on. IÔÇÖm my last year as a banker the team went from 16 to 8 or something crazy so IÔÇÖm guessing there are no business bankers able to manage the workflow since banks keep reducing staff
Weird, I could do it on the Westpac app and it would be open straight away.
I note, this isn’t a business account and I already had an account. I’m unsure if your comment is the first account you have with the bank or not
