Seeking Help with Rising Energy Prices: An Overview

Hello everyone!

I just want to take a moment to express my excitement about the stunning weather we’ve been enjoying in Auckland this winter. Isn’t it just incredible? The sunshine and mild temperatures really add a joyful bounce to our daily routines and significantly improve our spirits!

The Challenge: Rising Energy Prices

Now, moving on to a more pressing issue – I’m reaching out for assistance regarding energy prices and potential bundles. My partner and I have been on a low user rates plan with Genesis for the past year, which was great until it expired at the beginning of June. Since then, we’ve been automatically rolled over to a new pricing plan, and we’ve noticed a substantial increase in our utility bills. This has prompted us to explore different options and find better deals.

Feeling Overwhelmed

The challenge I face is that every time I attempt to search for a new deal or various offers, I become overwhelmed – and I’ll be honest, my dyslexia doesn’t make this task any easier. There seems to be an avalanche of information available, not just on direct energy provider websites but also on various comparison sites. It becomes quite a daunting task to sift through everything and identify the best option for our situation.

Request for Assistance

I’m hopeful that someone here might be able to assist me in breaking down our most recent bills and energy usage data. By doing so, I would have a clearer understanding of what I should be looking for when considering alternative plans. Additionally, if there is a brokerage service that specializes in energy plans in New Zealand, I would be very interested in learning more about it.

Key Information

To give you a better idea of our situation, here are some important details:

  • Location: Central Auckland, 1022 postcode
  • Household: Two individuals live in our home
  • Heating: We utilize a heat pump as our only source of heating
  • Gas Usage: We use plumbed gas for cooking on a gas hob and have continuous hot water
  • Broadband: Previously, we bundled our broadband with our energy deal for $60 a month, but this has since increased to $90 a month for Slingshot unlimited fibre 300 broadband.

I’m certainly open to any offers that could include broadband as part of the deal.

Attached Documentation

For reference, I’ve also included a copy of our latest utility bills showcasing the rates we are currently being charged. Hopefully, this will provide some context to our situation and aid in assisting us in identifying a better energy plan.

Thank you so much in advance for any help or suggestions you can provide in this matter! Your support is greatly appreciated!

It is horribly confusing. I don’t think the comparison tools make it any easier as they give different results for the same usage. I link two MoneyHub guides below that are helping lots of people, with the disclaimer that Genesis is a client, but we include EVERYONE (other than those who didn’t like our results who asked to be excluded) and make it as transparent as possible. The main comparison guide now gets 25,000+ search users a month, and people like it, so I want to share it.

[https://www.moneyhub.co.nz/power-company-comparison.html](https://www.moneyhub.co.nz/power-company-comparison.html) – a huge amount of work goes into this, and it has an XLS you can download and use to narrow the search

[https://www.moneyhub.co.nz/power-broadband-bundles.html](https://www.moneyhub.co.nz/power-broadband-bundles.html) – more work, with a clear result.

We’ve written a lot, but it’s working well, and you can trust the process by reading our methodology.

Wishing you the best and thanks for posting.

It’s very complicated. If you want the best deal you have to know your usage data and get rates from each provider’s website (some you have to request a quote), then spreadsheet it all accounting for night rates and bundle internet deals. In my experience, the bundle deals didn’t matter as much as the difference in power rates

I made this tool: Change only the greyed out cells!

    Hope this helps someone.

I have a similar one for EV plans and for plans with peak and off peak hours.

you are a really low user overall it is evident from the data present on the bill itself.

there is a website run by consumer which is independent and although they also get kickbacks similar to Moneyhub, they are more independent.

Given your low usage, I would look strongly at Frank Energy and yes they are a sister company to Genesis, they have some of the lowest daily rates in the industry.

ask Genesis or download from the app/website your half hour usage data, which is available, I do it all the time.

Shop around, and if you have to call a power company dont do it Monday morning or Friday morning unless you have 2-3 hours to wait. You can get through to the IRD quicker.

The three that I am looking at are Flick, Mercury open plan, and Contact free weekends plan. I think Contact is gonna win for us.

How is your bill so cheap :O

  • ralphiooo0

It’s bordering on false advertising in my opinion.

I went to sign up with Mercury to get their $300 sign up bonus.

But when I looked at the rates it wasn’t a bonus at all. They lock you in for 1 year and charge you more for power 0.25kw compared to $0.18c on their flexible plan.
