Ranking Member Tim Scott Advocates for Small Businesses and Housing Reforms

Washington, D.C. – Today, Ranking Member Tim Scott (R-S.C.) participated in an insightful discussion hosted by Punchbowl News, where the focus remained on small businesses and the overall economic landscape. On the Empowering Main Street in America Act:

“The reality is that the panelists did a commendable job conveying the pressing business matters at hand. Growing up in poverty, one of my childhood dreams was to ensure my mother could own not just a home, but a secure garage for her safety. I envisioned achieving this through football or a successful business endeavor. Listening to the last panel made it clear: access to capital for businesses remains exceedingly difficult. When I launched my Allstate Insurance franchises, I approached a bank with what I considered an asset — my nine-year-old car with 253,000 miles. However, the banker labeled it a liability instead.”

“Securing funding can be incredibly challenging. The Empowering Main Street bill aims to simplify the process for prospective entrepreneurs to present their cases to their local communities, enabling them to receive the investment opportunities they need. By reducing barriers, promoting more equitable access to financial resources, and facilitating opportunities for community engagement, we hope entrepreneurs can share their compelling business plans more effectively. The intent is to establish a ‘yes’ culture in funding decisions.”

“Had it not been for a community member who recognized my potential, trusted my vision, and made a financial commitment, I would not be here speaking today. It’s imperative that we acknowledge the impact of elusive capital on community growth. Communities deprived of small businesses risk stagnation and decline — a situation that disproportionately affects African-American and Hispanic neighborhoods. For those starting from scratch, the absence of established networks and influential relationships can hinder their progress.”

On the SEC Chair Gary Gensler’s Regulatory Overreach:

“Considering Gensler’s absence, it’s obvious that tough questions await him. There’s a consensus across the political spectrum that excessive regulations hinder access to capital. My intent was to address how the SEC’s increasingly burdensome approach hinders entrepreneurs from obtaining necessary funding — a counterproductive effort. Additionally, the SEC’s standpoint on cryptocurrencies and digital assets has been troubling. While recognizing the contentious nature of these topics, I firmly believe that for the U.S. to maintain its position as a leading global economy, we must prioritize innovation alongside regulation.”

On the Basel III Endgame Proposal:

“We must ask ourselves if the current financial environment is indeed secure enough. The stress testing banks undergo ensures their readiness to meet market challenges. However, further capital requirements imposed by regulations can lead to fewer available resources for small businesses. Implementing Basel III translates to denying essential capital to those businesses that require it the most. More market activity generally drives costs down, benefiting small enterprises. Our goal remains to challenge these legislative initiatives and regulatory measures, whose intentions, while seemingly positive, fail to comprehend the significance of free-market dynamics.”
