From calves and pigs to even puppies, area youngsters exhibited their pets at the fair’s annual small animal show, which ran alongside the 4-H senior premier showmanship competition.

The senior premier showmanship event served as a platform for 4-H members to display their animal handling expertise, as outlined by Alicia Webb, interim 4-H Extension educator. She explained that while other livestock events focus on judging the animals, showmanship events assess how well young individuals handle and present their animals, while also testing their knowledge about them.

During the senior premier showmanship event, 4-H senior showmanship champions for each animal species showcased at the fair participated in a round-robin format, showing their skills across various types of animals, ranging from cattle to rabbits, as highlighted by Webb.

The event has gained popularity in the county, providing not only a competitive atmosphere but also an enjoyable experience for participants, she added.

Magen Tol emerged victorious in this year’s senior premier showmanship event, displaying remarkable competence in handling animals.

Webb expressed her delight at the level of participation in 4-H events at the fair. She noted significant growth in the number of horses and swine exhibited at the Yellow Medicine County Fair, along with a thriving beef cattle project. Additionally, 4-H members showcased a wide variety of general projects, with vibrant displays and full tables.

One major advantage of 4-H at the fair is that it allows kids and youth to explore their interests and gain valuable insights from the judges, Webb emphasized. The fair offers a unique opportunity for young individuals to interact with experts in their respective fields.
