**Digicel Foundation and Pan Trinbago Partnership for Technology in Education (TIE) Centre Programme**

The Digicel Foundation and Pan Trinbago have partnered to launch the Technology in Education (TIE) Centre Programme. The announcement was made on World Steelpan Day, August 11, 2023.

The TIE Programme aims to provide technology centers, following a “panyard model”, where eight centers will be established in collaboration with panyards across the country. This initiative is being made possible through an investment of TT$540,000.

Four steel orchestras have been selected as the initial beneficiaries of the TIE Centres. The nominations were made by Pan Trinbago President Beverley Ramsey-Moore and the Central Executive. The selected organizations are Katzenjammers Steel Orchestra in Tobago, Curepe Scherzando Steel Orchestra, NGC Couva Joylanders Steel Orchestra, and Harlem Syncopators Steel Orchestra.

The Digicel Foundation has also called for applications from registered steelband organizations to apply for grants to transform their panyards into Technology in Education (TIE) Centres. To be eligible, the organization must have a designated space that can accommodate a computer lab and already offer after-school youth or community training initiatives. Furthermore, the organization should demonstrate a sustainable plan for expanding its outreach and demonstrate the potential impact of the proposed TIE Centre on a significant number of people.

The inspiration for the panyard model came from the successful partnership between the Digicel Foundation and the Tobago Panthers Steel Orchestra, which opened a TIE Centre last year. The Tobago Panthers Pan Theatre TIE Centre provides a homework center and various after-school programs that benefit approximately 30 children daily. Brian Thomas, General Manager of the Tobago Panthers Pan Theatre, attests to the positive transformation the center has brought to at-risk youth by providing increased access to resources and support programs.

Beverly Ramsey Moore, President of Pan Trinbago, expressed excitement about the partnership with the Digicel Foundation and is confident in its success. She highlighted that the panyards will become not just a space with computers but “Centres of Excellence.” Given the influx of youth to the panyards every night, the TIE Centres will serve as a platform to propel and empower these young individuals.

Registered steelbands have until August 31, 2023, to submit their applications for the available grants. Successful applicants will have 6 to 8 weeks to implement their TIE Centre project. The application form can be accessed online.
