Students at Scholars Academy, located in Queens, experienced an exciting glimpse into the future of firefighting last Thursday, thanks to a high-tech demonstration organized by the FDNY Robotics Unit.

Demonstration Highlights the Positive Uses of Technology

The Rockaway Park institution is proud to promote STEM—an acronym representing science, technology, engineering, and math—educational initiatives. This event was an important milestone for the school and its commitment to fostering a deep interest in these fields among students.

“We are truly thrilled to be the first school in the district to host such an impactful event, and we hope to inspire other schools to follow suit,” remarked Principal Michele Smyth, embodying the excitement of the occasion.

During the demonstration, first responders showcased cutting-edge technology, including thermal drones designed to access hard-to-reach areas and locate individuals in distressing situations. These capabilities highlight the practical application of advanced technology in saving lives, reinforcing the importance of innovation in emergency services.

“People always discuss how reliant we are on technology today, but they often overlook the immense benefits that it can provide,” expressed 11th grader Oluwafisayo Ogunsola. This sentiment reiterated the importance of integrating technology into our daily lives for positive outcomes.

Additionally, the demonstration included robot dogs that assist in managing hazardous materials, responding to building collapses, and tackling emergencies in underground environments. “These robotic dogs are incredibly adept at navigating subway tracks,” stated Andrew Scharf from the FDNY, emphasizing their crucial role in dangerous scenarios.

FDNY Aims to Inspire Future Innovators

Educators at the event hope that the lessons learned will ignite curiosity and enthusiasm among students regarding career paths in technology and emergency services. “I aspire for my students to discover new ideas for career opportunities and internships as they journey toward higher education,” said high school robotics club advisor Dylan Persaud. This vision illustrates the potential impact of the event on students’ futures.

For participants in the robotics and math clubs, it was not only a demonstration but also a unique opportunity to observe the application of their academic interests in thrilling ways. “It’s fascinating to see the real-world applications of drones and consider how we can utilize them in various situations,” remarked 11th grader Jada Mohan. The event served as a bridge between education and tangible career opportunities.

Meanwhile, for the FDNY, engaging with the youth symbolizes a chance to attract the next generation to public service careers. “I believe that some of the students here may well be the ones designing the next generation of drones that we will use at the FDNY. Being able to influence a young person’s belief in their potential is incredibly rewarding,” said FDNY Lt. Fred Carlson, who underscored the importance of such outreach efforts.
