Community Cleanup Efforts Transform Everett’s Small Business Scene
A Welcoming Atmosphere in Everett
EVERETT, Wash. — An Everett nonprofit organization is making a significant impact by supporting small businesses through community cleanups, which in turn help attract customers to the area. The Bunker Arts Collective, under the leadership of Executive Director Evan Reed, is at the forefront of this initiative, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a safe and inviting environment for both residents and local businesses.
Importance of Community Cleanups
“These cleanups are immensely valuable for our community; they play a crucial role in upholding the quality of life for our residents as well as our small business owners,” Reed stated. He has been actively engaged in community cleanups for over a year and shows no signs of pausing his efforts anytime soon. KIRO 7 previously spoke with Reed about his commitment to cleaning up the community, and his dedication remains unwavering.
New Business Brings Hope
Recently, Grocery Singh opened at the intersection of 19th Street and Broadway, marking a new chapter for the neighborhood. “We are here trying to serve the community,” shared Iqbal Preet Singh, one of the founders of Grocery Singh. This multicultural grocery store breathes new life into a space that was once home to Bartell Drugs but had been vacant for over a year.
Gurleen Powar, also from Grocery Singh, noted, “The area has suffered from graffiti and vandalism during its time of neglect.” As the duo prepares to navigate the challenges of starting a new business, they received a surprising and uplifting message from the community.
Community Support and Volunteer Efforts
Evan Reed reached out to Grocery Singh, proposing to organize a community cleanup to help welcome them into their new neighborhood. “Evan contacted us to say that they wanted to organize a community cleanup for us, to help us feel welcomed here,” Powar explained. On a recent Sunday, volunteers from Bunker Arts Collective gathered to clear away trash and apply measures to cover existing graffiti around the new store.
Reed emphasized the significance of supporting local businesses: “They’re open for business, they have a desire to integrate into our community, and we should encourage that partnership.”
Powar reflected on the overwhelming support they have received since opening. “Honestly, it almost made me want to cry. I was quite anxious about launching this new business, as it requires so much work and brings a lot of stress. Seeing the community’s love and support truly provided a feeling of relief,” she expressed.
Get Involved in Community Cleanups
Community members interested in getting involved can participate in cleanup activities outside Grocery Singh located at Broadway & 19th, happening from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Sundays. Bunker Arts Collective organizes cleanups every week, and volunteers are always welcome. If you wish to make a difference, consider joining these efforts!
