**Title: Harassment by Local PD and How AI Legalese Decoder Can Provide Assistance**

**Introduction**

Hi Reddit, I (23 F) am reaching out for advice and support as my boyfriend (28 M) and I find ourselves facing a distressing situation involving local law enforcement here in Louisiana. Over the past couple of days, we have experienced a series of actions from the police that have left us feeling harassed and fearful. In this post, I will provide a detailed account of the events while also exploring how AI Legalese Decoder can assist us in handling this situation more effectively.

**Background and Context**

For the past two years, my boyfriend and I have lived peacefully in an apartment located about 15 minutes away from our current residence. During this time, we had no negative encounters with the police, apart from a minor traffic ticket. However, our lives took a turn when we moved into a house a little over a month and a half ago.

**The Harassment Incident**

Things were going relatively well until last night when we decided to go out around 10 pm to purchase some snacks and a vape from a nearby smoke shop. After leaving the smoke shop and heading towards Kroger, we noticed a police officer parked in a parking lot to our left with his lights on, seemingly pulling someone over. However, as we continued down the road, the officer turned off his lights and began following us. This situation continued for about a mile until my boyfriend pulled into a gas station to refuel. The police officer parked in the empty lot next door, turned off his lights, and waited for us to leave. We felt increasingly anxious.

Upon leaving the gas station, the officer continued to tail us closely for a significant distance. We finally arrived at a red light in front of Kroger, where another police officer was positioned to the right side of the intersection. To our surprise, this officer abruptly stopped in the middle of the intersection and hastily tried to U-turn to get behind us, disregarding the red light. However, he failed to reach us in time, and we proceeded into the Kroger parking lot. During our 20-minute shopping trip, we noticed the first officer waiting in the parking lot with his lights off. Additionally, we observed another officer stationed at the CVS across the street. As we left Kroger and started the drive home, both patrol cars purposefully followed us at an uncomfortably close proximity for the entire 5-7 mile journey. Upon arriving at our house, the officers passed by and abruptly slammed on their brakes, repeating this maneuver three more times in front of our residence. The level of intimidation we experienced was overwhelming, prompting us to lock ourselves inside for the rest of the night.

Today, we spent the day in a neighboring town doing door-to-door deliveries without encountering any problems from law enforcement. However, as soon as we returned home around 7:45 pm, we noticed a police officer at a gas station across the street. As soon as he saw our vehicle, he abruptly stopped refueling and swiftly entered his car to commence following us again. It is important to note that we have not been pulled over or questioned during these incidents. The officers have merely persisted in trailing us for miles, causing us significant distress over a cumulative period of two to three hours spread across the events of last night and today.

**Feeling Harassed and Fearful**

Given our clean record and lack of any past legal issues, my boyfriend and I are deeply troubled by this sudden targeting from the police. We cannot help but feel scared and harassed, particularly considering that we are an interracial couple. The possibility that our race may have contributed to this situation adds to our concerns.

My comment assumes that you have never been in trouble with the law, and your bf is telling the truth that he has neither. You said you recently moved into a new place. Likely previous tenents were on police radar and these dumb cops havnt figured out you are not them.

I would ask your neighbours/landlord/previous owners if there was any illegal activity at the residence before hand. If it turns out yes, I would go down to the police station with my id that reflects the new address and just let them know you are a new tenent at the address and have some safety concerns regarding the past tenents. When they ask why say your neighbours said xyz happened before you moved in and you had someone knock on your door who was not making sense and appeared to be on drugs. Dont file a complaint or make a report.

The goal is just to have a conversation and subtly make them aware you dont have a record and are a new tenent. You dont even need to mention the police are following you.

Unfortunately, this is a tactic that some cops will do.

You are correct in thinking that if you make a complaint you’ll put an even bigger target on your backs. Yes, it’s harassment and yes it’s wrong what the cops are doing.

So, if you want to take on this battle you’re going to need a civil rights lawyer.

There is a YouTuber who has hours of dash cam video of him driving while 2-3 different cops are following him just as you’ve described. This YouTuber has video evidence and it’s still happening to him. He’s made complaints and believes it’s why it’s gotten worse.

The cops in his case and yours are just waiting for you to make a mistake so they can pull you over…

I urgently recommend you purchase a dash cam ASAP, and make sure it’s a front & rear cam. Make sure you drive like angels and don’t give those cops a reason to pull you over.

Freshen up on your traffic laws. Did you know that most DUI’s are caught because when you were turning you didn’t turn into your closest lane? Look up the most common driving mistakes.

Know the laws and know your rights!

NAL but have 8 year experience as a cop. My guesses are:
    1. Your BF isnÔÇÖt being honest with you about his lifestyle.

    2. Mistaken identity, sometimes police departments put out bulletins that list suspect vehicles. For example we once had a string of catalytic converter thefts and some store video showed the suspect vehicle was a black Lincoln SUV. Officers all over the county would try to follow and get a traffic stop on any black Lincoln SUVs in order to potentially catch them with stolen catalytic converters and power tools in their car. This is called a pretextual stop and is supported by the Supreme Court decision Whren v. United States.

    3. Maybe like another commenter said the place you live at was or is a known problem residence. In that case they may believe you are either associated with known criminals or are those criminals.

This will probably be an unpopular suggestion but have you considered talking to them?

Once when I was much younger I was driving around at night and had a cop following me. I drove into a neighborhood where I didnÔÇÖt live to see if he would pass me and he followed me at every single turn. I ended up pulling over and waving them down. The officer parked and talked to me, and when I asked why he was following me he said he was trying to get a good look at my license plate because he suspected it was fictitious. I had recently purchased a car from a different state while visiting my parents there, and he wasnÔÇÖt familiar with their style of temporary 30 day tag.

I get that this might be intimidating to try but is likely the only way you will discover what the real reason is.

ThereÔÇÖs some jurisdictions where police have been given directives to essentially chase ÔÇ£undesirablesÔÇØ out of town. Normally this is the family of someone who is arrested or on police radar for some reason. ItÔÇÖs legality is questionable and people have been trying to challenge it elsewhere. I would first look to see if thereÔÇÖs a reason they are targeting you (someone in one of your family in prison, etc). Then if you think itÔÇÖs a mistake try to do what the other poster mentioned (basically subtly give them evidence itÔÇÖs new people in town) or if itÔÇÖs not a mistake consider a lawyer. Complaining to the police doing it will likely not benefit you without representation.

Some dirtball from out of town was driving around in a black Lincoln Towncar during the night stealing from people’s vehicles (small farm town, no one locks doors), they were looking for him for awhile.

Go figure (with my luck) I also owned a black Lincoln town car (much nicer tho ƒÿå) that I drove here and there. Every single time I took that car out I got followed by police, even in surrounding towns. If they passed the house and it was parked down by the road they would stop & run the plate. I quit driving it for months bc it annoyed me so much.

    Maybe similar situation?
