    Been in public sector all my life. Negotiating has never been an issue. If they have an issue with negotiating then probably a good sign not to go there.

    Public sector roles are definitely negotiable, in my experience – anything over half of the median needs approval from the higher ups and unless the candidate is exceptionally good – the hiring manager generally wonÔÇÖt go through the hassle of those approvals.

    My son has a low level local government role. He assumed heÔÇÖd start at the bottom of the scale. He was offered the top end $15k more than his role at the time over 40 hours rather than 50. He was stoked!

    IME the midpoint is a bit disingenuous, as it is often actually considered the top. To go over by much is rare and depends on skills vs demand. If offered a salary well above the midpoint you may find future raises a little disappointing, those higher in the band’s tend to be a little less.

    There probably is room to negotiate, but it may vary based on the position.

    There is a lot less room to negotiate for a grad position, but quite a bit more margin for a senior moving to a senior in another place (or principal). Same with contractors. Your chances increase if they are having trouble filling the role or you have experience in that area.

    Also, check whether the wide band is actually wide or reflects tiers within the band (e.g Adviser L1 and Adviser L2). Or whether the organisation has limited progression and balances that with wide bands.

    You should also check if the organisation has moved to step based pay, and what step you would be on.

    don’t provide your references until you talk about the salary on offer. i did, then tried to negotiate. they said no. i took the job anyway… i don’t regret it though.

    I was scaled at the top end of the band when I got my current role, which is for central government. If you have the skills and experience, then you can definitely go up the range.

    Always start your negotiation from the higher end and negotiate lower if you have to. Don’t take a role that pays you less than you currently make (unless you’re talking 300k to 280k).

    Public sector will use pay bands/scales like private so you can negotiate within the range.

    30k isn’t a liveable salary. Not even close. At a bare minimum, negotiate for at least 40-45k.

    You can and and should ask but expect to be on the low end of the scale. It is rear for public jobs to match private sector. There is usually more limitations on what the hiring person can offer.

    Also if you get a higher salary and end up earning more then your coworkers you may end up creating an uncomfortable working environment. Public sector is far more clicky then private in my experience.

    Ask for what you want. TheyÔÇÖll most likely counter with either what you asked for, or the most they can offer for the role without extra paperwork, whichever is less. Either accept the offer or decline, they probably wonÔÇÖt go any higher.
