    I worked 12 HR shifts. 8am-8pm. Loved them. They were open 24/7.and wanted us to be at our station 15 min early but it worked great because we could also leave 15 min early.

    If you’re contracted to work 6:00-18:00 then those are the hours the company can insist that you work – it’s not ’12 hours when you want’, it’s ‘these specific 12 hours’ (I absolutely don’t mean to sound harsh, I just can’t find a way to phrase that more politely sorry!) It’s just a ballache that it means that informal favours coming in early to help someone out can’t work any more.

    Is the ability to get away 15 minutes earlier a ‘nice to have’, or is it something that is genuinely useful sometimes (e.g. to get away in time to pick up a child or something like that)?

    I can’t comment on whether it’s ‘legal’ or not, but in the grand scheme of things, from the outside it seems like 15 minutes isn’t worth falling out with your employer over, given that it’s not like they’re asking you to work more time without pay, just regulating that you work your precise contracted hours.

    **Now**, the malicious compliance in me notices that the *earliest* you can clock in is 14 minutes before your shift starts, but they don’t say the *latest* you can clock in? And you’re allowed to clock out 4 minutes before your shift ends? Then sod them – organise everyone to clock in exactly when their shift starts and clock out 4 minutes before it ends, so there’s a 4-minute period each changeover where nobody’s working.
