With the increasing life expectancy in Australia, we are facing an ageing population and rising rates of diabetes. These factors contribute to the growing burden of wounds in our society.

Currently, there are approximately 430,000 patients in Australia who require specialized wound care due to chronic wounds. To address this issue, Monash Medicine, Nursing, and Health Sciences has developed the Masters of Wound Care program, the only one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere.

Graduates of the program are equipped with essential skills in wound assessment and management, contributing to a higher standard of care and better patient outcomes.

Looking Towards the Future

The Masters of Wound Care program has been successful in producing highly skilled wound clinicians, evidenced by the recent graduation of 18 students. This accomplishment represents a significant contribution to improving patients’ quality of life.

As the field of wound care continues to evolve, there are plans to offer a PhD program in the not-too-distant future, enabling further specialization and expertise in this critical area of healthcare.
